Step 1 Topic Selection – Public Service Announcement Project
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women in the United States. Despite the recent decline in the number of deaths from breast cancer, studies still show that breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States among women. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that every year in the U.S, approximately 264,000 patients are diagnosed with breast cancer among women and approximately 2,40 cases among men (CDC, 2020). Additionally, approximately 500 deaths in men and 42,000 deaths in women are reported every year in the United States. African American women have been reported to record the highest number of deaths from breast cancer as compared to white women. My public service announcement project will focus on breast cancer to promote appropriate mitigating strategies at both personal and public levels.
The main reason behind the selection of this topic is the high death rates reported among women from breast cancer. Consequently, despite the hasty development of diagnostic and treatment methods for breast cancer, different regions and individuals from certain racial backgrounds tend to suffer an increased burden of the disease, like African American and non-Hispanic women (National Cancer Institute, 2019). Breast cancer being the most common among women, other than skin cancer, has also resulted in a huge financial burden with healthcare costs amounting to approximately $20 billion by the year 2020 in the United States (Konski, 2021). For the above reasons among others, it is necessary to address breast cancer as a public health issue and come up with appropriate strategies to reduce the associated burden.
