Review the evidence-based practice project ideas you described in Topic 5 DQ 1. Based on your initial ideas, what types of scholarly nursing research (such as quantitative or qualitative research, peer-reviewed resources, etc.) would be required to further investigate the issue? Select an article related to your topic. Identify the criteria you would use based on the CRAAP test to evaluate the appropriateness of the research. Why is it important to select research that meets these criteria? Evaluate the “CRAAP Test” article from the New Jersey Institute of Technology Library, located in the topic Resources. Explain the five criteria as they relate to your selected article.
An individual’s leadership qualities are those that they naturally exhibit. One who exemplifies and makes use of these qualities to inspire others to join them in pursuing a shared vision is a leader. An advanced practice nurse can serve two masters in different leadership capacities. Giving care providers and patients equal focus and direction is one approach. By doing so, the nurse can aid both parties in achieving their goals. The other way is to communicate well with the staff and the patients. Thus, the nurse is better equipped to understand the requirements of both populations and develop appropriate care plans. Although it may be difficult, it is essential to remember to offer services to both groups. The nurse’s role is twofold, caring for patients and supervising other staff members.
Your patients are your primary masters in this line of work. It is incumbent upon you to provide them with the best care available. You will need to be up to date on the latest medical procedures, in order to deliver quality care.
The person who employs you will become your second master. Therefore, it will be essential to manage both time and materials effectively. To top it all off, an excellent communicator is a prerequisite for any nurse leader in today’s healthcare system.
It could be challenging to satisfy competing interests. It will lead to confusion and divided loyalty. Nurses must remember that the goal is to provide the best care possible for their patients. Therefore, it is our responsibility to be effective leaders while delivering patient care.

As an advanced practice nurse, the idea of serving two masters would be relevant to receiving assignments from senior leadership and managing the satisfaction of your staff while keeping them compliant with the policies and procedures dictated. As a nursing leader, it seems that there is always a give and takes between the ideas set forth to make the institution compliant and profitable when it comes to delivering these same ideas to the staff that is needed to provide patient-centered care and is on the front line day in and day out. In this constant tug of war, although senior leadership delegates the policies that maintain compliance so they can financially support the institution taking out the money aspect, the original stakeholders are the employees who deliver the care and the patients who receive it. The employees who are always in contact with the patient are held to towns when it comes to managing their time and the supplies needed for patient care in the delivery of care. As a nursing leaders, our job is to support and educate them and, in some ways, shield them from any backlash from senior leadership when policies have changed or when patients are disgruntled. As a patient receiving care that may be affected by cost-cutting, the availability of staff coverage of supplies needed, and aftercare services, we must also be a buffer to try and assist our nursing staff in providing the best care possible within their means. In all actuality, it seems like we serve three masters, not two.
