Christians and doctors have quite different ideas about illness. A disease arises when the body’s normal are interrupted, according to medical specialists. Religion, on the other hand, may have a distinct perspective. According to the case study, Mike and Joanne are devout Christians. They think that everything that happens in their life is the result of God’s involvement. Some Christians feel that disease is God testing their faith. Some people believe that disease is a test from God to see if a person has a strong faith in him. For such Christians, the best approach to deal with disease is to hold out hope that it will go away on its own once God has finished testing them. There is no doubt that only God has the ability to heal us. Meanwhile, Christians may believe that illness is a punishment from God. Others believe that sickness is God’s way of expressing his displeasure with human behavior. As a result, in order to cure the illness, people must live in accordance with God’s instructions. Finally, some Christians believe that God has appointed their doctors and other healthcare experts to assist them in managing their illnesses. Medical specialists assist God in ensuring the health and well-being of his animals in this scenario. Mike’s family sees James’s illness as a litmus test for their faith in him, and they are treating it as such. As a result, they have high hopes that after God has tested them, he will intercede and heal him.

Therefore, Christians must view medical interventions as a part of God’s efforts to advance health and wellbeing. They should have confidence that becoming better will enable them to see God at work. In order to assure his son’s healing and wellbeing, Mike should give his approval to medical treatment. The greatest thing for him to do is to put his faith in God and know that his son will heal thanks to dialysis and a kidney donation. He should visualize the doctor and other medical staff as angels while he prays. He should therefore maintain his conviction that their medical procedures will serve God’s goals. Mike will use beneficence and non-maleficence to make sure his son gets the finest treatment possible. Furthermore, the decision will absolve the family of any future responsibility if medical interventions fail to aid James in recovering.

In what ways, as a doctor, could a spiritual needs assessment help Mike decide on the best course of action for James, his family, and anyone else involved in his care?

The given case study is about Mike and Joanne. They are Samuel and James parents. James has been diagnosed with acute glomerulonephritis, kidney failure. According to James’s physician, James requires to undergo dialysis as a way of maintaining his kidney functions. However, James’s parents are of the opinion that he seeks religious healings from his pastor. The physician agrees to their decision only for James to be brought back two days later with worsening health status. He was started on dialysis and requires urgent kidney transplant. Therefore, this research paper examines the case study with a focus on the various aspects that should be considered for the health and wellbeing of James.

Should the Physician Allow Mike to Continue Making Decisions that Seem to him to be Irrational and Harmful to James?

The physician should not allow Mike to make decisions that irrational and harmful to James. Firstly, healthcare providers have the obligation of ensuring that the safety of the patient is protected. They make decisions that aim at optimizing the wellbeing, health, and recovery of the patients from their

conditions (Scott, 2017). Healthcare providers also play the role of patient advocates. This implies that they fight for their patients in situations where their health and lives are at risk. An example is the case study where it is evident that Mike’s decisions are causing more harm to James than promoting his recovery.

The physician also has knowledge on issues that cause in his practice. An example of such issue is the conflict between respecting the autonomy of the caregivers and taking decisions that promote the health and wellbeing of the patient. In such situations, healthcare providers are expected to make ethical decisions that will not only protect the health of the vulnerable but also demonstrate prioritization of the health issues affecting the population. Consequently, the physician should not allow Mike to make decisions in a way that facilitates the understanding of the family. This includes explaining to the family about the prognosis of their son and possible outcomes if immediate interventions are not adopted.

The decision of not allowing Mike to make decisions concerning James’s health is not a violation of the autonomy of the patient. The physician will instead be promoting his autonomy by ensuring that the best interventions are used to promote his health. Healthcare providers often experiences ethical dilemmas in their practice. In such situations, they are expected to prioritize the needs of the patient, hence, the soundness of the decision made.

Assessment of the patient’s spirituality is an important part of holistic care. Having a spiritual examination would have helped James’s illness be better managed in a variety of ways. In the first place, the physician may have learnt about the patient’s family’s spiritual needs and their relationship to the care that was needed. Medical interventions can be utilized in a way that doesn’t interfere with the interests and expectations of the family if he had been able to investigate this option. If the doctor had conducted a spiritual evaluation, he or she could have identified the teams that should be involved in making care decisions for the patient (Doreen, 2016). For example, when determining on the appropriate treatment method for the patient, he would have taken the spiritual leader of the family into account. a case study of the spiritual needs of a patient (PHI 413)

Spiritual needs evaluation would have also helped the physician determine what values and behaviors the family has that are necessary to ensure the adoption and long-term success of their adopted interventions. He could have gained insight into how his personal values, beliefs, and practices might affect the patient’s care. Because he was a doctor, he could have used biblical examples to help the family better comprehend the necessity of medical treatment (Doreen, 2016). He may have shown them how religion and medicine are intertwined in this method.

Conclusion

As a result, the case study has demonstrated how religious beliefs might impact the use of medical treatments. It has shown how patients’ religious views must be incorporated into care if they are to achieve optimal health. Because of this, healthcare providers should include spiritual assessment in their treatment regimens. This will enable them to provide care that promote. Case Study: Healing and Autonomy

Mike and Joanne are the parents of identical twins James and Samuel, who were born 8 years ago. James is currently suffering from acute glomerulonephritis, which is a type of kidney failure. James was initially admitted to the hospital for complications from a strep throat infection. The spread of the A streptococcus infection caused kidney failure. James’ condition was serious enough that he needed to be treated right away. Acute glomerulonephritis caused by strep infection usually improves on its own or with antibiotics. James, on the other hand, had high blood pressure and enough fluid buildup that required temporary dialysis to relieve.

The attending physician recommended that dialysis be started right away. After some discussion with Joanne, Mike informs the doctor that they will forego dialysis and put their faith in God. Mike and Joanne had been moved by their pastor’s sermon a week before, and they had also seen a close friend regain mobility after a serious stroke when she was prayed over at a healing service. They decided it was better to take James to a faith healing service right away rather than subjecting him to multiple rounds of dialysis. Nonetheless, Mike and Joanne agreed to return to the hospital after the faith healing services later that week, hoping that James would be healed by then.

Two days later, the family returned and was forced to put James on dialysis due to his deteriorating condition. Mike was perplexed and troubled by his decision not to treat James sooner. Was he lacking in faith? Was it God who was punishing him or James? To make matters worse, James’ kidneys had deteriorated to the point where dialysis was no longer a temporary solution and he needed a kidney transplant. Mike and Joanne, crushed and desperate, immediately offered to donate one of their own kidneys to James, but they were not compatible donors. Over the next few weeks, while James was undergoing dialysis on a daily basis, some of their close friends and church members offered to donate a kidney to him. None of them, however, were tissue matches. PHI 413 Case Analysis Essay – Patient’s Spiritual Needs

James’ nephrologist called to set up a private consultation with Mike and Joanne. James was stable on regular dialysis, but he would need a kidney transplant within a year. Given the urgency of the situation, the nephrologist informed Mike and Joanne of a donor who was an ideal tissue match but had not yet been considered—brother James’s Samuel.

Mike is conflicted about whether he should have his other son Samuel lose a kidney or wait for God to perform a miracle this time. Perhaps this is where his faith will be put to the ultimate test. “This time it’s a matter of life and death,” Mike reasons. What could be more faith-testing than that?” PHI 413 Benchmark – Spiritual Needs of Patients: Case Analysis Essay
