Welcome to Week 1 – History of Public Health Nursing
NURS 340 Week 1 – History of Public Health Nursing Assignment
This week and next you will study the history of public health nursing. This course is set up so that you will study one topic for two weeks at a time. You will need to post to the discussion board every week, but your assignments will be due on the second week for each new topic throughout the course. Pay close attention to the agenda to guide you on what to submit each week.
Agenda
- Read Chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 39, & 46 from your text.
- Watch the presentations and review all related course materials.
- Post your introduction in the Student Lounge discussion board.
- Respond and participate in Week 1 discussions.
Objectives
This week, you will:
- Explain the significance of the standards and their related competencies of professional public health nursing.
- Define the eight principles or domains of public health nursing practice.
- Discuss historical events and relate them to the principles that underlie community and public health nursing today.
- Explain what factors prompted the development of the Affordable Care Act.
- Understand and describe the challenges in reducing the gap between health-care expenditures and health-care disparities.
- Define public health policy and politics while identifying the relationships between concepts in addition to ethical and legal considerations.
Complete your week 1 discussion prompt.
- Analyze the roots of public health nursing and its influence on practice today. What significant changes or historical events have made public health what it is today?
Discussion Board
The Discussion Board is designed to stimulate class dialog that would normally take place in a face-to-face setting. Participation in the Discussion Board serves as a learning strategy to help demonstrate your knowledge of the course content.
To earn full weekly discussion credit, students are expected to comment on all prompts posed by the instructor and provide responses to classmates. Each Discussion Board post will be assessed using a rubric (under the My Grades menu item). In addition to reviewing the grading criteria in the rubric, please note the following expectations for Discussion Board posts:
Discussion posts must be completed during the week they are assigned. Discussion posts made in advance of the assigned week will not count toward your grade. If you wish to work ahead, please compose your responses in a Word document, then post when the week arrives. NURS 340 Week 1 – History of Public Health Nursing Assignment
Each week, you are required to submit a reply to each initial prompt and replies to your peers or instructors in the Discussion Board. The required posts are as follows:
-
- No later than Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. (Pacific time) each week, you must respond to each initial prompt posted by the instructor. An automatic 10% deduction will be assessed for all late initial postings. Please note that there may be one or two initial prompts per week, depending on the course material. It is your responsibility to reply accordingly -AND-
- Throughout the week, and no later than the conclusion of each week, you must reply to a minimum of two (2) peers or instructors, per prompt although replying to more is highly encouraged. Replies must be made throughout the week to show active participation.
Any post made in the Discussion Board must be well-developed.
-
- A well-developed post is meaningful, shows relevance to the topic, and reflects your knowledge of the material. Well-developed posts demonstrate synthesis of the subject matter, extend the discussion by building on previous posts, and include proper source citations, when applicable. Posts limited to “I agree,” “Great posting,” or “Thank you” will not be assessed as well-developed, and will therefore not be considered a contribution to the number of required weekly posts.
Week 2 Case Study: Public Health Nursing—Present, Past, and Future
Review the following case study and complete the questions that follow. Submit your completed paper to Blackboard using the assignment link.
As a public health nurse at a free clinic, you are assessing and interviewing a 21-year-old woman who has come to the clinic because she doesn’t have any energy and hasn’t felt good in weeks. During the interview, you learn that she averages one meal per day, smokes up to two packs of cigarettes per day, and rummages through trash to find items she can sell to purchase food, snacks, and cigarettes. She admits to using street drugs every once in a while when she can find someone who will share with her. She admits her life is a mess and she doesn’t know how to make it better.
- What data can you gather based on available client information?
- What questions should you ask yourself while interviewing this client?
- During planning, how can you, as the nurse, best assist this client?
- What are the potential strategies that would assist the client to a “better” life?
Your paper should be 2 pages in length, in APA format, typed in Times New Roman with 12-point font, and double-spaced with 1” margins. If outside sources are used, they must be cited appropriately. NURS 340 Week 1 – History of Public Health Nursing Assignment
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
- Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
- Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
- One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
- I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
- Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
- In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
- Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
- Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
- Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
- Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
- I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
- I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
- As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
- It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
- For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
- Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
- Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
- Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
- The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
- Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
- If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
- I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
- As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
- Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
- Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
- Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
