NUR 590 Benchmark – Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal: Organizational Culture and Readiness
Assessment Description
In order to successfully implement a an organization, the change agent must assess the organization’s culture and readiness for change. In 750-1,000 words, analyze the culture and level of readiness of the organization for which your evidence-based practice project is proposed. You will use the assessment of the organization’s culture and readiness in the Topic 8 assignment, during which you will synthesize the various aspects of your project into a final paper detailing your evidence-based practice project proposal.
Include the following:
- Describe the organization’s culture and explain to what degree the culture supports change. Consider organizational and leadership structure, mission and values, interprofessional collaboration/team engagement, communication, perception of the organization by employees, etc.
- Select an organizational readiness tool and assess the level or readiness for change within your organization. Identify the readiness tool and summarize the survey results. Discuss the degree to which the culture will support and sustain an evidence-based practice change. Consider strengths and weaknesses, potential barriers, stakeholder support, timing of the proposal, and resources. Provide rationale.
- Discuss what health care process and systems you would recommend for improving quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness for the organization.
- Propose strategies to better facilitate the readiness of the organization.
- Identify the stakeholders and team members for the project. Include what their duties will be in the evidence-based practice project proposal.
- Explain what information and communication technologies are needed for the implementation and how they will be integrated in the setting by the internal stakeholders. Explain how these will help improve nursing practice and care delivery for individuals and populations for your intervention.
Refer to the “Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal – Assignment Overview” document for an overview of the evidence-based practice project proposal assignments.

NUR 590 Topic 4 DQ 2
Identify which statistical test you would use in conjunction with your selected research design from DQ 1 to evaluate the outcomes for your evidence-based project proposal and explain why you selected this test. What kind of information will this test provide about your outcomes?
According to Parab & Bhalerao, “statistical tests are mathematical tools for analyzing quantitative data generated in a research study” (2010). There are a number or test that researchers can use which can also become overwhelming and cause confusion for the research, and that can lead to sabotaging and tainting their study. Selecting the statistical test helps the researcher understand what to look for in the study as well as help organize their data. Parab & Bhalerao (2010) stated that “Before selecting a statistical test, a researcher has to simply answer the following six questions, which will lead to correct choice of test:”.
- How many independent variables covary (vary in the same time period) with the dependent variable?
- At what level of measurement is the independent variable?
- What is the level of measurement of the dependent variable?
- Are the observations independent or dependent?
- Do the comparisons involve populations to populations, a sample to a population, or are two or more
samples compared?
- Is the hypothesis being tested comparative or relationship?
Statistical testing is used explain the results of a study. The test that I would use would be the t-test. “A t-test is a type of inferential statistic used to determine if there is a significant difference between the means of two groups, which may be related in certain features” (Investopedia, n.d.). I would used this test because of show the averages of nurses to patient ratios to help determine the correlation between low staffing and high staffing and whether each has a positive or negative effect on patient health outcomes.

Statistical tests can be chosen based on independent factors and other project designs. My project seeks to identify if PPE education increases informal (family) caregiver compliance to PPE usage. I’ve identified at least one confounding variable, which is the effects of PPE usage modeling by staff. Siebert et al. (2018) found staff modeling and teaching was a big part of compliance of visitors. However, there is a test which accounts for differences in participants.
I am choosing a mixed design ANOVA test due to the used of different participants in each group. A mixed design measures “change over time, differences between the groups, interaction of time and group effects” (Tappen, 2016). This will show the differences between groups (education versus no education) and within the groups themselves. It can be used to measure the change between before and after the intervention of education. It will help control for the different participants in each intervention group. It could measure the change from several different time points, as desired.

It is important to choose the correct statistical test when conducting research, as research should maintain validity. To correctly perform the statistical analysis of quantitative data, two key points should be considered: One is to identify the type of experimental design correctly, and the other is to check whether data meets the preconditions of the parameter test (Liang & Wang, 2019. If these are not considered, it can cause misuse of data and can possibly conclude false conclusions. I believed that the Paired T- Test would best fit my project proposal. The Paired T-Test tests the difference between two variables with the same population. For example pre and post test scores. This would allow the comparison of performance before and after the completion of the organizational change implementation. Determining the amount of hands off time during cardiopulmonary resuscitation would be the first variable, while the data obtained for hands off time during CPR with implementation of continuous compressions during defibrillation would be the second variable. Comparing these two variables should produce the conclusion that continuous compressions during hands on defibrillation decreases hands off time during CPR and increase patient outcomes. Ultimately this test would determine the amount of “hands-off” during CPR comparing standard CPR and continuous compressions during defibrillation.

Explain the importance of a “spirit of inquiry” in an evidence-based culture and what you can do as an advanced registered nurse to encourage this within your practice or organization. In response to your peers, compare the role and implementation of EBP in your specialty area with another advanced registered nurse specialty.
Science teaches us to explore and question. In medicine, it the same. There is always something to explore in medicine, whether its to improve upon interventions or to learn complex diseases. Throughout my career as a nurse and nursing student, it was always expressed to me that in order for me to become a successful nurse I would need to engage in continuing education for the life of my career. In life, we should always strive for continuing education for personal development and growth. The future of nursing will require nurses to question, explore and take initiative making decisions on patient care, interventions, in leadership and public health. “Explain the importance of a spirit of inquiry in an evidence-based culture and what you can do as an advanced registered nurse to encourage this within your practice or organization. In response to your peers, compare the role and implementation of EBP in your specialty area with another advanced registered nurse specialty” (National League of Nursing, 2014, para. 1). The COVID-19 pandemic was a wake up call in that we as a nation need to focus on improving our nursing practice. Nurses will need to be encourage and pushed into leadership roles, executive positions and in the areas a research and development. Many nurses took the lead in saving their patients and hospitals as the pandemic ravaged hospitals throughout the country. There was also a spike in people researching how to get into the field of medicine (particularly in nursing and nursing research). There became a fascination into epidemiology, public health and medical research as people and nurses became curious about vaccine development and how outbreaks of disease and virus happen. As a advanced registered I would encourage evidence based culture by being an example of someone who uses EBP and work in collaboration with other staffers to implement EBP research into the real world. During the heigh of the pandemic, EBP research was used to help patients as other interventions and methods failed.
Implementing EBP
In the field of advanced nursing practice, there are various ways advanced nurses implement EBPs. Nurse practitioners implement and EBP “when she/he prescribes a treatment for a patient that is substantiated by scientific research; Often, nurse practitioners look for an experimental study that compares the efficacy of a treatment with an untreated control group” (Nurse Practitioner Schools, 2021).
Certified mid-wifery
For nursing midwives, EBP is are used to enhance the lives of the mother, child and community. Mothers are the backbone of communities and the health and safety of woman determines the health and safety of their respective communities. Areas of challenges are identified and EBP are used to improve the lives of women in order to safely carry, deliver and raise children.
