NUR 514 The Evolution of Nursing Informatics Presentation Assignment

Assignment

Nursing informatics is a critical part of modern practice for advanced registered nurses, especially those who assume leadership positions in their care environment. Nursing informatics allow nurses to analyze data to enhance patient care and assist organizations to implement new patient care technology and models. Advanced registered nurse leaders have a critical role in implementing informatics in their practice for better patient outcomes (Yen et al., 2020). Informatics is a core aspect of quality care delivery in healthcare facilities. As such, this presentation discusses the evolution of nursing informatics as an innovative health care delivery model for advanced  .

The objectives of the presentation include defining nursing informatics and its history, the impact of nursing informatics on nursing leadership, clinical practice, education and research in the profession. The presentation delves into the effects of regulations by government on health information systems’ policies and the role of nurse-led innovation models as well as the relationships due to the advances in informatics. The presentation also looks at the use of informatics to enhance quality of patient care. Lastly, the presentation provides an example of nurse’s role in health care data transformation and knowledge to enhance patient care by deploying informatics in their practice.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) asserts that nursing informatics is a specialty in the profession which integrates nursing science and different information and analytical sciences aimed at identifying, defining, managing and communicating information, data, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice. The implication is that nursing informatics play critical roles in health care. Those seeking to join the specialty should possess a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) as the minimum. However, those seeking leadership as advanced practice nurses should have a master’s degree and certification. They should also possess experience and strong technical skills and project management capabilities alongside experience in leadership (Kelley, 2019). Nursing informatics specialists are the translators that have transformed into health technology innovators to improve overall quality of care.

Informatics nurses are distinct professionals and hybrid heroes in healthcare who advocate for impactful innovations to keep patients safe and at the focus of care provision. Their contributions and guidance lead to improved workflow for healthcare staff and allow them to develop best practices through effective management of informatics structures processes and use of technology (Kelley, 2019). Through this approach, nursing informatics has an evolving value to for better quality care.

From the start of modern nursing, data emanating from standardized patient records were considered as essential resources in assessing and enhancing the quality of care. Nursing informatics began to evolve in the second part of the last century but did not have a standardized language. The attributes of computability and semantic interoperability affected the realization of the specialty until 1980s when it emerged as an essential part of enhancing patient care quality. The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) was established in 1992 after the ANA recognized the specialty as a critical component of healthcare provision. The 1980s is considered as the growth-spurt decade which enabled the profession to be what it is today (Knox, 2019). The implication is that to realize the potential of nurses to transform and enhance health care and outcomes through informatics will need fundamental changes among individuals, organizations and systems.

Nursing informatics impacts nursing leadership as it implores nurse leaders and those in the management of organizations to develop innovative care models by leveraging on information technology. Nurse leadership focus on enhancing quality care and through informatics, nurse leaders can improve patient care and outcomes. Nursing informatics affects clinical practice through the collection and analysis of, and leveraging data to make more effective care decisions and choices. Informatics influences the nursing practice through the management of resources and development of multidisciplinary teams to improve care delivery. Nursing informatics has impacted documentation as nurses no longer need paper charts that had to be updated meticulously using handwritten notes and comments (Moore et al., 2019). Nurses are more likely to use electronic health records and other forms of documentation to input patient’s health information and medical history. Informatics impact healthcare administration through leveraging data to make staff schedules, care plans and use evidence-based practice interventions in healthcare delivery.

Nursing informatics is an essential component of quality care delivery and affects education and research in nursing. Due to increased use of informatics nursing, nurses can enhance their competence in using health information technology. Faculty nurses can integrate the aspects of health information into curriculum at all levels of nursing training. A core aspect of nursing informatics is the value-addition that it has on health care outcomes and increased need for more research on using effective documentation for delivery (Farokhzadian et al., 2020). The increased integration of health information technology with artificial intelligence underscores the critical approach to better documentation and outcomes as well as effective decision making and IT training for nurse practitioners.

Organizational policies create goals that technical mechanisms serve, highlight appropriate uses and release of information, create avenues for prevention and detection of breaches and set rules to discipline offenders. Organizational policies must create a balance between the need to access appropriate and relevant health information for care provision and the protection of patients’ rights to privacy and compliance to existing legal frameworks. Imperatively, government regulations on patient safety and data security are critical aspects when designing organizational policies in nursing informatics and other aspects of health information technology (Moore et al., 2019). Patients can only reveal their information when they know that their privacy and confidentiality rights are guaranteed by the health care providers or system. This means that government regulations like HIPAA, HITECH, and Affordable Care Act 2010 provisions are upheld by a healthcare provider.

The creation of a health care organization which is fully committed and focused on safeguarding personal health information is complex. However, privacy protections of patient health information and data is critical to overall care delivery and effective engagement and interactions with patients. Privacy protections in health care must adhere to the government regulations like Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) that implores organizations to develop data standards concerning electronic healthcare information. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 gives the federal government authority to oversee the promotion of Health IT that comprises of quality, safety, and security and secure exchange of information (Moore et al., 2019). The implication is that healthcare organizations should adhere to these provisions to protect patient’s data and its privacy (Yen et al., 2019). The provisions of the Affordable Care Act also implore organizations to have effective protocols on patient health information for increased privacy.

The Mayo Clinic remains one of the more innovative models of care to date. In response to the rapidly changing healthcare scene, the Mayo Clinic launched their Mayo Clinic Care Network (MCCN) in 2011 (Wald et al., 2018) and it has only continued to grow. The Mayo Clinic is considered innovative due to their formal and widespread use of collaboration that spans continents (Wald et al., 2018). As of 2017, the MCCN had 45 partners, spanning across 35 US states and including the Philippines, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates (Wald et al., 2018). International locations is not what makes the MCCN innovative, however. It is considered innovative because providers and healthcare teams can collaborate globally on a case, enabling an MCCN physician to utilize their best resources anywhere in the world. Providers can eConsult an expert for a case without that expert having to physically relocate or force the patient to seek care elsewhere (Wald et al., 2018). Providers can also participate in eBoards, where experts from across the MCCN come together to discuss particular cases on a larger scale (Wald et al., 2018). The Ask Mayo Expert feature brings Mayo Clinic knowledge right into the hands of the patient via internet, enabling patients to glean trusted information when and where they need it (Wald et al., 2018). By using technology to bring teams and patients together, the cost of travel alone is nearly reduced to zero. All of these pieces come together to form a large network of highly collaborative experts with mobilized resources, thus furthering the ability to provide state of the art care when and where the patient needs it most.

Hello Ali,

I do agree with you that among one of the healthcare organizations that have successfully incorporated innovations in technology to increase collaboration is Mayo Clinic. This giant healthcare system has well established networks in over 140 countries and 50 states in the US. This extensive coverage with an annual patient load going to over one million, it calls on improved technological innovations that promote timely and effective care to the patients. Among the 65,000 employers of the clinic, there are various specialties that work in multidisciplinary team’s collaboration approach to deliver quality care. Dr. William. J. Mayo, the founder of the organization, had the greater vision on how clinical collaboration would be the most efficient and effective way to deliver quality and timely care to the patients (Taberna et al., 2020). “The best interest of the patient is the only interest to be considered, and in order that the sick may have the benefit of advancing knowledge, union of forces is necessary.” — Dr. William J. Mayo, 1910 (“Mayo Clinic Care Network – About Us – Mayo Clinic, 2019”).

Re: Topic 7 DQ 1

Advanced practice nurse educators possess the ability to develop current, applicable nursing curricula and teach this information to adult student nurses to provide knowledge and skills to pass the NCLEX exam to enter the nursing profession. Informatics coordinates patient care data to provide all pertinent information required for patient care, leading to improved outcomes (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). Nurse educators may be responsible for teaching student nurses or newly hired nurse how to use the electronic health record (EHR). The government created incentives for health care providers to adopt the use of the EHR in the health care setting by 2015 through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) with increased reimbursement (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). The EHR adoption must have the components of “meaningful use”. Meaningful use of the EHR signifies the ability to gather and share data, clinical process usage, health information exchange, improved patient outcomes (individuals and populations), and the patient utilizes computerized tools to manage their own health (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) provides certification for nursing informatics (American Health Information Management Association [AHIMA], 2021). The aim is to have competent individuals who assist with providing reliable, accurate, complete, accessible, and private health care data. Information Governance is the manner in which health care organizations handle health care information in a secure, legal, efficient, and effective manner. AHIMAs website provides education on Information Governance (AHIMA, 2021).

Hello Camille,

I do agree with you that the nurse informaticist provide synchronized and well-coordinated data that is crucial to the provision of quality and timely care to patients. The concept of nurse informatics has gained popularity in the 21st century healthcare systems as the integration of information and technology has become the core pillars of quality care (Khezri & Abdekhoda, 2019). It is imperative to have the nursing curriculum to have elaborate and well-structured curricula that will guide the nurse students through proper incorporation of technology in patient care. The curricula should be clear on essentials of data collection, recording and handling (Forman et al., 2020). Incorporation of electronic health records (EHRs) and the Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) are crucial to managing patient information efficiently and utilizing it through the care process. These calls upon the nurses to work in collaboration with the nurse informaticist in order to clearly interpret the data and give accurate and timely care. According to the American Health Information Management Association, the use of well documented patient records and data helps reduce duplication of tasks, reduces cost and promotes efficiency of care.

Envision Healthcare has a program called evolution Health that focuses on building a better home care experience for their patients who have recently been discharged from a hospital. According to Evolution Health’s mission statement they “focus on hiring compassionate, highly experienced clinicians and empowering them with evidence-based clinical protocols, we deliver better outcomes, fewer re-hospitalizations and higher patient satisfaction” (Evolution Health, 2020). This organization prides themselves on delivering the highest care to their patients in a home care setting through collaboration from hospitals and the patients’ primary care providers. Through this collaboration, patients are able to have decreased 30-day re-admission rates among high-risk Medicare patients (Roepers et al, 2017). This innovative model affects interprofessional collaboration because all members of the team work together for the benefit of the patients. This organization has a medical command center (MCC) and a mobile integrated team (MIT) that are both available 24/7 for coordinating resources and managing the health of the patient. The ability to treat and manage patients through telemedicine can decrease the overall cost of patients’ long-term admissions and potentially re-admissions for more complex recurrent medical issues.

Hello LaShionna,

I do agree with you that the Evolution Health promotes multidisciplinary teams’ approach and collaboration among its staff, patients and home-based primary care providers. The utilization of home-based care providers in collaboration with clinicians and nurses has proved to be cost effective in terms of reduced rate of readmission hence create more space at the facility for patients who are in critical conditions and require highly specialized care. The use of MDT collaboration has reported higher success rates in the oncology departments specializing in head and neck cancers. The MDT comprises of ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), maxillofacial surgeons, medical oncologists and radiologists (Taberna et al., 2020). I do agree with you that the organizational capacity to incorporate telemedicine into its daily operations have promotes the collaboration and increased the scope of healthcare. The use of telemedicine has proved to be the best option in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic hence reduces chances of spread of the infectious diseases and also eliminates the chances of one contracting hospitalization related infections (Kichloo et al., 2020).
