NUR 514 Leadership Style Reflective Essay Assignment

Working in the health care industry, I’ve noticed that management controls policies and also reports to their superiors in order to stay within budget or, hopefully, develop plans for safety and improved unit flow. My leadership roles have been beneficial and active in rounding with staff and patients, contributing not only to patient satisfaction but also in researching ways for employees to work their best. Of course, both roles are important in the healthcare system and help to provide high-quality patient care. Strong leaders must make quick, wise decisions while soliciting feedback from patients and peers.

Plan ahead of time By providing excellent , nurses can effectively lead. APRNs should be active participants in direct patient care and treatment plan development. The world is changing, and APRNs must work alongside other disciplines and professionals to highlight the impact of nursing care on individual or population health (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). APRNS can collaborate with other teams to improve patient safety and care success by utilizing their leadership skills. An interdisciplinary approach to care is best for improving quality, maximizing resources, and coordinating care for patients with complex health needs (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).

In order to deliver high-quality healthcare services, are essential. Although they may require different types of outlooks, abilities, and behaviors, both are comparable in some respects. The World Health Organization (WHO) asserts that excellent managers should aim to become good leaders and that effective leaders require management capabilities (World Health Organization, 2019). Leaders communicate to others their vision of what can be accomplished. Through inspiring others and looking for resources, leaders develop tactics for bringing the vision to life. Managers make sure that the resources are used efficiently and effectively to get the best results (WHO, 2019).

While management is widely regarded as a science because it consists of a set of logical methods for carrying out whatever the role requires, leadership is frequently regarded as an art rather than a science. Leaders and managers differ in a variety of ways, based on my experience working in the healthcare industry. Leaders actively develop goals and objectives for their employees, with the goal of increasing efficiency. Managers work tirelessly to complete projects, and they frequently stay on the job for as long as it takes.

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) may both lead and manage because of their expert level of knowledge, complex decision-making ability, and clinical competences for expanded practice unique to the setting in which they are credentialed.

Description:

The purpose of this is to assist learners in developing effective communication by emphasizing the proper application of APA style. APA style is required for the graduate program.

Style of Leadership
Participative leadership is one of the leadership styles that aligns with my philosophy of nursing care. This is a of leadership in which the emphasis is on the employees’ input into the decision-making process (Alvinius, 2017). An organization’s management and leadership ensure that employee input is considered during the decision-making process. There is open communication in which employees and senior staff exchange ideas about how the organization should operate (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2016).

My nursing philosophy is consistent with the above-mentioned leadership style, as I believe nursing should be participatory in nature. Nurses’ primary goal in their settings should be to encourage shared decision-making. Patients should be able to choose the type of care they need. Additional healthcare team members should be involved in the assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of care. As a result of active participation by all stakeholders, outcomes such as patient and provider satisfaction with the care they provide and a low rate of adverse events in healthcare settings are expected. The emphasis on active stakeholder participation is one aspect of this leadership style that appeals to me. It acknowledges that different people have different perspectives on

Reflection
Many aspects of my practice will include elements of participative leadership. My first priority will be to advocate for a patient-centered approach to nursing care. Furthermore, I will prioritize the patient’s perception of how their healthcare needs can be met. In addition, I will advocate for patient involvement in decision-making. As a leader, I will encourage shared decision-making because it increases patient satisfaction with the care they receive. I will also solicit feedback from other nurses on the best strategies to implement. They will also participate in the assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of change initiatives within the organizations I lead. In addition, I will foster an open communication environment in the workplace. When employees communicate openly, they can express their ideas and concerns without fear of repercussions. I’m hoping that these interventions will lead to a shift in nursing practice in the institutions where I’ll be working in the future.

Re: Topic 8 DQ 2

Telehealth is the use of telecommunications technology that allows for health data collection and transfer, communication between providers and patients, allowing care to be provided to patient’s remotely despite of their location. Frey & Chiu (2021) mentions there are four methods of telehealth which include: synchronous or live video, store-and-forward, remote patient monitoring, and mHealth (mobile health). Synchronous or live video involves a two-way communication between a provide and a patient in real time. Store-and–forward is data and patient history collected by a provider which is stored and can later be obtained by another provider through a secure platform. Remote patient monitoring consists of using digital or electronic tools, that records patient’s health information, such as blood sugar and blood pressures, which can be transmitted automatically to a provider for review. Mobile health refers to the practice of medicine and public health aided by mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets, personal digital assistants, and the wireless infrastructure (Innovatemedtec, 2021).

Virtual care is the channel by which healthcare providers communicate with their patients; it is the actual virtual visit that takes place between the healthcare team (MD, nurse, PT, etc.) and the patient. For virtual care to happen communication technologies, such as video, chat or phone are required. This allows patients to be connected to the quality care they need, when they need it most (Synzi, 2018).

Telehealth can be beneficial when coordinating care for patients. For example, surgical patients needing pre-surgical care and post-surgical care. Nurses can contact patients via e-mail, video conferencing, or the phone, to setup appointments, do post-op teaching, and check on how patients are doing once discharged home after surgery. An example mentioned by McGonigle & Mastrian (2017) is that virtual care allows a nurse to coordinate and complete 12-16 telehealth visits vs 7 visits by a conventional home health care nurse.

A drawback a nurse can encounter with telehealth, is not being able to do an actual physical examination. There may be instances where a hands-on comprehensive physical assessment is important, which would require the patient to either go to the office or where a nurse would need to go to the patient’s home. Having to draw blood or the patient requiring radiology tests, and technical difficulties with technological devices, could also affect telehealth encounters.

Nurses need to be mindful of HIPPA regulations and remember they can only treat patients within the state they are licensed in when participating in telehealth (Frey & Chiu, 2021).

Self-awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.

For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self-assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self-leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection as directed below.

Refer to the study materials. Select and complete three self-assessments. Be sure to document the results of each assessment to assist you in completing the reflection portion of the assignment below.

Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.

In a 1,000-1,250 word reflective essay, address the following:

1. Provide a rationale and brief summary for selecting each self-assessment. Summarize the results you obtained on each assessment.

Leadership skills are considered important in management as it helps individuals achieve personal and professional success in an organization. Even though people tend to have different leadership skills, it is important to take into account leadership styles that befit a given set of an organization to improve the quality of management (Parush & Koivunen, 2014). Often, inculcating effective leadership styles requires one to undertake self-reflection to learn about different approaches that will guide in making decisions. However, based on the trait theory of leadership, the ability to lead a team is a concept that one can acquire and develop throughout time. Guided by this argument, I will use self-assessment tools to assess my leadership strengths. I will avail results of the self-assessment tests and provide a brief explanation of areas for improvement to develop my future leadership styles.

The evaluation of my emotional intelligence is the primary choice for determining my potential as a leader. The examination of feelings and the ways in which they impact our relationships with other people is the basis of the test of self-awareness. Emotions are what define how well a leader deals with rage problems and also how well one can solve disagreements amongst subjects (Presbitero, 2017). As a result of its focus on a person’s capacity to communicate successfully with other members of a team, emotional intelligence is widely regarded as one of the most important abilities for successful leaders to possess. My results for the emotional intelligence exam showed that I have a perfect score of 120, which indicates that I am completely without flaws. To put it another way, I strive for perfection in all I do, including the completion of any given work. In addition, I make it a priority to check that all of the tasks are completed in accordance with the plan, and I make every effort to perform my work without making any mistakes.

The second exam that one takes as part of their own self-evaluation is an analysis of their personality. The analysis of a person’s characteristics is the primary focus of this evaluation. The goal is to determine whether or not an individual is suitable for leadership roles, or whether they are better suited to being led by others. According to the various theories of leadership, individuals can have innate characteristics that give them an advantage over other people in a competitive setting (Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy, 2014). Certain qualities of character, such as self-assurance, might set an individual apart as a potential effective leader, particularly in circumstances in which difficult choices need to be taken. My personality assessment tests show that I am an advocate, according to the results of the test that was carried out. Before I form an opinion about something, I almost always consider the surrounding circumstances. In addition to this, I make use of my intuition to focus my mental energy on finding solutions to pressing problems that come up at my current place of employment. My identity demonstrates that I am capable of exercising self-assurance when making choices within the organization.

The value evaluation was chosen as the third option for the self-awareness test. The evaluation method offers a concise explanation of a person’s driving forces behind their actions. The evaluation is essential because it establishes a person’s conduct in accordance with the aspects of life that they prioritize higher than others (Sutherland & Jelinek, 2015). My results show that I have a high score for instrumental values, as indicated by the exams that assess value. When it comes to making decisions in the medical institution, I apply reason, intellect, and self-control, which is what the premise implies. When it comes to working with my coworkers, I am also ambitious, honest, fearless, and forgiving.

Leadership Style Reflective Essay

Self-awareness is critical in different leadership positions. In most cases, leaders should develop emotional intelligence to deal with various problems in the organization. For the leaders to understand themselves, there is always a need to take different personality tests. The emotional intelligence test is one of the assessments that can enable an individual to adjust their behaviors and adopt new strategies of dealing with people. Emotional intelligence tests can provide an individual with essential information that can assist with self-development and self-management. Knowing the degree of emotional intelligence in the work environment can lead to the provision of valuable information to direct and advance one’s career.  The purpose of this paper is to discuss the significance of self-assessment from three tests and offer a reflection of the same.

Assessments Selected

For the assessment, I selected an emotional intelligence test, personality assessment, and learning style assessment. I selected an emotional intelligence test because I wanted to understand and effectively manage my emotions and of those around me. Sometimes, people feel offended when I interact with them; therefore, emotional intelligence tests would enable me to understand my areas of weaknesses and make appropriate adjustments in an attempt to increase social skills. The test is critical in knowing the level of my interactive skills and the possible adjustments that can be made to enhance my

leadership abilities. The test score for the emotional intelligence test was 70%. From the result, it was indicated that I am reasonably skilled in identifying, perceiving, and expressing emotions for myself and others (Nightingale et al., 2018). From the outcome, my skills in emotional intelligence aid in the processes of understanding others and how they feel. My level of emotional intelligence indicates the ability to understand my feelings and that of others.

From the personality assessment test, the score was 79%, indicating that I am an extrovert, a trait that determines how I relate with people socially. The test also indicated that I am observant and able to make decisions and cope with emotions. The test showed that my feeling for others was 81%. Finally, from the test, the outcome indicated that I have a strong sense of judgment with the score at 72%. For the learning style assessment, the scores were as follows: Aural 5, Visual 2, Reading/writing 3, and Kinesthetic 9. The results indicated that my learning ability relies on experiences, practical exercises, case studies, examples, things that are real, and trial and error.

Welcome to Week 2

This week’s reading will examine characteristics of nurse leaders, analyze different theories and styles of leadership, and explore the nurse leaders’ role in influencing and developing organizational culture. As discussed in this week’s reading, nurse leaders must understand the challenges in health care, implement evidenced-based leadership into clinical practice, and transform health care through innovation.

There are several different approaches to leadership. Transformational leadership is the process in which leaders and followers motivate each other to attain and achieve levels of success. Servant leadership is the concept that leaders focus on the growth and well-being of people and the communities they serve. The servant leader shares power and places the needs of others first while assisting people to develop and perform to the highest standards possible. Principles of successful leadership include a commitment to excellence, building a culture around service, mold future leaders, focus of employee satisfaction, encourage individual accountability, and recognize and reward success.

This week’s writing assignment focuses on self-awareness and self-assessment. Self‐awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.

For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self‐assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self‐leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection.

Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. Re: Topic 2 DQ 2

The primary focus on the follower distinguishes servant leadership from other styles of leadership. Most leadership styles focus first on a mission and then on empowering followers to achieve that mission. Servant leadership focuses first on the ability of individuals to succeed, then on the mission’s success. Servant leaders assist their followers in growing and succeeding, which helps the organization achieve its mission. A servant leader should be viewed as a courageous steward who holds people accountable for their own good. Servant leaders are those who develop and empower others to achieve their full potential. This speaks directly to the followers’ individual potential rather than the organization’s. Servant leadership assumes that if followers maximize their potential, it will directly translate to the organization’s potential and overall performance. When servant leadership is used correctly and with the right intentions, an authentic and natural form of reciprocity occurs between the leader and the follower, increasing workforce engagement and improving organizational performance (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018).

Listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to people’s growth, and community building are ten characteristics of servant leadership (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). Listening is the foundation of communication. A servant leader listens to what others are saying, both verbally and nonverbally, and then reflects on what they hear in order to lead a group to its full potential. Having empathy or understanding and sharing the feelings of followers allows servant leaders to be placed at their level. Servant leaders are also able to identify the characteristics that distinguish each individual and provide them with the ability to understand how best to support and lead their followers to mission success, in this case how staff nurses respond to their patients’ needs. While leaders may not always accept their followers’ performance or actions, they always accept each follower as an individual.

When the servant nurse leader shows genuine interest in the team and provides additional support by meeting the team’s needs, the organization’s quality of care improves (Thomas, 2018). The servant nurse leader’s listening and empathy for their patients allows for interprofessional communication because the nurse will include the patient and family to identify the patient’s needs, make decisions about the patient’s care, solve problems together, and evaluate the planned treatment.

I used servant leadership as a Nurse Manager, especially during the annual employee evaluation process. Simply put, the employee evaluation process determines whether or not the individual meets the organization’s expectations. It lacks features for personal development. I devised a format in which each nurse was tasked with identifying areas of strength and opportunity. Then, as a group, we discussed strategies for developing those areas. When compared to nurses with more years of experience, a nurse with two years of experience felt she was not ‘experienced’ enough to consider growth in the department. We agreed to attend a preceptor course and then begin mentoring nursing students and later precepting new hire nurses to the department.

A servant leader is a skilled communicator, a compassionate collaborator, a system thinker, and a moral authority figure. Nursing practice and the nursing vocation lend themselves to the servant leadership model through their dedication to service.

1.     Emotional Intelligence Assessment: “Emotional Intelligence Test”: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/tests/personality/emotional-intelligence-test

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (El) can be defined as the aptitude to understand and command your own emotions and those of the people surrounding you in a particular environment. I chose this assessment because it is an important personal pillar in the nursing career. This is because, as humans, we relate with others through our emotions, which also affects our work and even personal relations with others (good point). Our mental health is also understood based on how we express our emotions. After taking my El test which is provided for in this assignment, I scored highly on social skills and motivation. Having scored 7 (seven) on self-awareness and 5 in self-regulation, 8 in motivation, 6 in empathy, 8 in social skills. The importance of understanding this test results is that Emotional Intelligence plays a major role in how a person relates with others, from a position of self-awareness as a skill, which enables one to be analytically reflective. Well done!

In regards to my results and research results about the same subject matter, one can conclude that my self-awareness score of 7 and social skills of 8 are my useful strengths concerning to my work environment, which has to do with people and their service as the core. Due to its nature, it demands an individual to have the ability to be empathic on their client, which I have scored a 6. This is an area of growth for me and a challenge that I must work on to get better at feeling other people’s pain and experiences as my reality. Good work!

What spiritual considerations surrounding a disaster can arise for individuals, communities, and health care providers? Explain your answer in the context of a natural or manmade disaster. How can a community health nurse assist in the spiritual care of the individual, community, self, and colleagues?

Abigail Retana

I can’t imagine how hard it can be to go through a natural disaster, seeing how hard you have worked to build a house/car and seeing nature take it away can be heartbreaking. As nurses, we have to be alert and be able to assess any situation, in the case of disaster the spiritual consideration we have to think about is a disaster can have a toll on someone’s mental health. Our eBook makes an important statement, “They should be aware of cultural differences and approach each patient with sensitivity and respect, allowing them to grieve, react, and respond the way that is appropriate for them, as long as they are not causing self-harm or harming others. In areas where populations are extremely vulnerable, such as areas of high poverty” (Grand Canyon University, 2018), meaning letting our patients have the freedom to express what they feel spiritual can help heal the trauma, making sure this doesn’t harm someone else. Man-made disasters can be described as armed conflict and climate change. For example, armed conflict can bring division within the communities, loss of resources, and lives. A way to help the community to cope with it is by relying on emergency rescue groups, that are capacitated with special training. “Emergency response workforce was established knowledge, more sophisticated, and more capable of reducing illness and saving more lives in less time” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). The responsibility of the PHN is to be aware of the community’s needs and put in place interventions that are going to be beneficial and better the outcomes of the community.

Abigail,

A great way to prepare to help others during disaster is self reflection, as you did in your opening statement. Having a clear idea of how we can empathize, or how we would feelin such situations can really help us become good listeners and connect with others in the community. Many times spirituality, and beliefs are questioned during times of disaster, but allowing them to react in whatever manner they see fit, so long no one is harmed, is a great way to help the community. Natural or man-made disasters can be scary, chaotic and tragic. Nurses have always proved to be reliable responders when it comes to emergency situations. Their compassionate nature typically compels them to respond to those in need, even when their own safety is at risk. Many people mistakenly believe that spirituality and religion is the same thing, but they are not. Religion is a narrow definition of spirituality (Karadogan, 2022). Spirituality is concerned with a person’s meaning of existence and how they interact with God or a higher force that transcends religion. A tragedy that shakes everyone’s spirituality affects the whole society because it may result in unexpected loss. People can feel helpless, despair, remorse, doubt God’s existential supremacy over their beliefs and faith, and become enraged by the situation.

Spiritually balanced people can find meaning in their lives by associating with the supreme power. Consider a tragedy such as a flood, in which people lose their families, their possessions, and even their hope. This type of disaster necessitates a lengthy period of psychological, physical, and spiritual recovery. Spiritual treatment helps people who are experiencing spiritual disasters find hope, courage, and purpose (Egan, 2019). Understanding a population needs and implementing a whole community approach to planning will help me in developing emergency operation plan that will provide equitable services and resources to all community members.

A community health nurse can assist in the spiritual care of the individual or community by listening to them as they speak their faith or praying with them. They can attend an event with the community or individual that promotes healing. Overall, creating a therapeutic environment is valuable in assisting the patient with the healing process and being supportive of them and their feelings will prove beneficial. In addition, assisting with a faith-based, non-profit organization that provides support during the disaster relief would help the community recover (Falkner, 2018). Many of these faith-based organizations provide support and assistance following their religious principles that speak of compassion, caring, and helping the less fortunate (Falkner, 2018). Volunteering to join any of these organizations may fulfill the nurses desire to help the community and give the nurse a sense of pride.

NUR514: LEADERSHIP STYLE REFLECTIVE ESSAY

Leadership constitutes one of the most important aspects of an organization. It not only assists a person to achieve professional success but also motivates a given group towards realizing organizational goals. Leadership arises from social influence bestowed on a person and this determines the behavior of people referred to as subjects within an organization (Kitson, 2018). Many a time, people have distinct leadership skills that set them apart from one another and also determines how they influence others to act in an organization (Walsh & Arnold, 2020). Even though individuals tend to have unique leadership skills based on their character, they need to focus on leadership styles that match goals of the organization they operate under.

In most cases, people engage in self-reflection as a way to select leadership styles that will guide one in decision making during engagement with a specific organization (Spears & Lawrence, 2016). Besides, according to the trait theory of leadership, an individual may acquire as well as develop the ability to lead a team throughout a time of consistent learning (Yavuz, 2020). As for this exercise, I will utilize the available self-assessment tools to gauge the strengths of my leadership. The results of the assessment will be reported and analyzed to provide insights into my leadership skills. Finally, a succinct explanation of possible areas of improvement will be discussed to unravel practices that I can embrace in order to adjust my future leadership styles.

Summary of Self-Assessment Results

Self-awareness is a significant aspect of leadership as it provides a benchmark on whether a person can influence a team or not. Leaders also use self-awareness to understand self-worth and develop positive ways to control their emotions in order to deliver change in organization (Walsh & Arnold, 2020). Since I aspire to be a leader, I will use self-awareness to know how to relate my feelings to subjects and to align my character in a way that meets an organizational need. In this regard, as I assess myself, I will focus on areas that will yield positive outcomes in addressing my leadership styles (Yavuz, 2020). As such, three areas have been selected to influence my character and future skills of leadership.

Topic 2 DQ 1

Oct 68, 2022

Differentiate between “leading” and “managing.” Based on your experience in the health care industry, explain how an advanced registered nurse can lead well and provide management. Share at least one strategy you have used to effectively lead and manage staff within health care organizations Consider interactions with patients, team members, daily tasks, and responsibilities as you formulate your response.

Leading and managing are often used synonymously but they do have distinct roles within healthcare. In the simplest of terms, people follow leaders, while managers have people who work for them (Wilden, 2018). Leaders have the skills to help influence, motivate, and inspire. Leaders set an example for how things should be done, creating a culture where people enjoy where they work. Managers have the acquired skill set of focusing on budgeting, hiring new employees, and maintaining the “status quo” (Wilden, 2018). Employees may fear a manager while leaders are respected and admired. Stepping into an advanced registered nurse role, these nurses need to take on both roles of leader and manager. With years of experience being a nurse, they are able to relate to their coworkers and be respected by their peers. As a new grad nurse, I do not have much experience, so I am constantly going to others for advice on how to do some things. My days are easier when there is a nurse who is educated and has many years of experience. I have respect for them. Stepping into a management role, you do not want to be feared but respected. It is important employees feel comfortable bringing up issues that arise in the unit. Being in the emergency department, everyone is so helpful and provides constructive criticism when something is not working. They suggest ideas to make things simpler, allowing the unit to run more smoothly. One strategy I would use is open communication with coworkers. It is extremely important everyone feels comfortable speaking their mind and their voice matters. Managers would be unaware of conflicts, issues, or systems not working if there was no open communication between management and employees
