Jean Watson’s Philosophy and Science of Caring Theory
The theory expresses how nurses provide care to all patients. From the theory, quality care is . According to this theory, caring is fundamental to nursing practices since it encourages health to be better than the simple medical cure. Jean Watson believes in the holistic approaches to healthcare processes (Jean Watson Nursing Theory, n.d). Watson’s theory has ten major concepts of factors; the first three factors are based on the philosophical foundation for the art or science of care. On the other hand, the last seven concepts arise from the above foundation. One of the main advantages of Watson’s theory is that it provides a common or universal framework that can be used in different scenarios and the management of different patients. The theory also puts patients in the context of the community, family, and culture.
Watson’s theory can be applied under different circumstances. For instance, it can be applied in the below situation.
A 52-year old has been diagnosed with lung cancer. It is her first afternoon in the treatment process; she is scheduled for therapy the following morning. The woman is divorced, her family lives out of the country, and is unable to travel to keep her company.
The three concepts of Watson’s theory that can be applied in the above scenario include the creation of a humanistic-altruistic value system, creating the connection with the patient by instilling hope or faith, and humanizing sensitivity for self and others. The woman is likely to undergo a life-changing medical procedure that requires sensitive approaches from the scenario given. Also, it is necessary to give hope through creating the connection between the patient and nurses/healthcare professionals involved in the surgical process.
Nursing professional associations or organizations do offer great benefits to their members and bedside nurses from the conferences they organize or the newsletters some of them send out to their members. Some of their publications share information about new technologies or inventions that can benefit the bedside nurse. From EBP, we found out that unnecessary insertion of indwelling Foley catheter is a major cause of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI). I first read about PureWick urinary collection system in one of those professional nursing organization’s newsletters and it was so impressive, and this invention is a great tool that helps female patients who are not only on bedrest but those are are incontinent or are at risk for fall. When my hospital acquired this system for patient care, my female colleagues like this so much and they are quick to set it up anytime a patient is on bedrest post procedure and I hear from patients that it is very convenient than using the bedpan. Some of these organizations offer continue education credit for nurses and in most states now, CEUs are required for nurse license renewal which is helpful to bedside nurses.
- Membership in a professional nursing organization offers nurses opportunities for continuing education, certification, role-related competencies, and educational conferences, that provide an opportunity to network with nursing colleagues from all over the world. Changes in healthcare occur almost daily. Joining a nursing organization that supports your specialty of practice puts nurses on the cutting edge of practice changes. Nursing organizations promote and encourage their members to use evidence-based practice. Nurses who are certified in their specialty will find that their nursing professional organization provides relevant continuing education sharing of challenges through networking and collaboration. Its very beneficial in bedside nursing care since it opens avenues for continuous education.

- Nurses are indeed lifelong learners I totally agree with that statement. Most of the knowledge I have learned was from hands on experience at the bedside after graduating nursing school. Although it may initially seem like a hassle to keep up with continuing education post graduation it is immensely helpful in our practice because most of the latest and most recent evidence based practices and best practices come out so frequently and after we graduate nursing school it really is up to us as nurses to be responsible and keep up to date with the advances in the ever changing nursing field. Being apart of these professional organizations definitely helps with motivation and keeping our knowledge current, it is definitely beneficial to the bedside nurse.
- Coming from my experience as a bedside nurse, these organizations were very helpful. The information they gave out about different practices, the continued education courses they provided helped me keep my license up to date as well. I definitely agree with the saying that we are considered life-long learners, because our practices change everyday with new studies.

The goal of a professional nurse organization is to bring nurses together in a collective group, focusing on the socio-economic status of nurses and the nursing profession worldwide by trying to influence global policies(Chiu, 2021) Professional nursing organizations support the professional field of nursing by being the very backbone of nursing. Several nursing organizations have been or are being viewed as the driving force behind professional development. Professional development in nursing is a key phase in nursing because of the availability of offered educational and learning opportunities. classes and resources, this is an important factor because it helps nurses to engage. Help nurses develop and maintain competence, enhance professional nursing practices, and support the achievement of career goals (Margarita 2022). The nurse-client relationship is a term used to describe advocacy, which is to support the individual to promote his or her own well-being. There are times when tactics are used to actively show support for those uses that are related to health care activism. The value that professional nursing organizations have in advocacy and activism related to client care is a vital phase of lifelong learning.. Nursing organizations promote and encourage the use of evidence practice in client care (Margarita, 2022).
