Managing Virtual Storage
The virtual machine (VM) is a computer program requires storage to store its data. Virtual storage can be used to improve the performance of the VM by presenting a single physical storage device or network-based storage in various types. The VM can access it without knowing the underlying hardware.
Managing virtual storage requires the careful balance of performance, capacity and cost. Administrators must decide if they prefer to use only solid-state drives, or hard-drive disks. They should also decide what kind of storage controllers to use and how many they will implement. To reduce costs, IT managers need to consider storage reduction capabilities like deduplication and compression.
There are three kinds of virtual storage: physical disks RAID groups and logical volume (LV). Physical disks and RAID groups divide the physical capacity into smaller units that servers or applications see as one storage device. A virtualization layer handles I/O requests from the server, and translates them to the appropriate physical storage disk.
The virtual storage model minimizes the hardware burden by segregating operating systems from physical devices and also by providing one point of administration. It also provides scalability by automatically adjusting the amount of physical capacity to meet the demands. Moreover, it allows administrators to perform many tasks in a non-disruptive way like moving data off over-utilized storage devices. This is accomplished using the technique of data migration. In general, the granularity of the mapping determines how fast meta-data will be updated, how much extra space is needed during migration and how quickly the previous location can be designated as free.
