Question Description
I’m working on a sociology multi-part question and need an explanation to help me study.
I need help on an answer for Puzzle 9 only which is found on slide 25.
Organizations Learning goals Three forms of public-private organizational interaction • Public-private partnership • Important because without public-private partnership then no meaningful economic and technological growth and advancement • Public sector regulation of the private sector • Important because without public sector regulation of the private sector then the result is always crisis or disaster • Private sector influence over the public sector • Important because large companies have political power to shape government laws, policies, and regulations What are organizations? What are organizations? Sphere of Life Name of the Organization(s) You Are Involved With (employee, customer, member, student…) Family Education Rutgers Health and Fitness (Sports) Religion Cross fit Politics and Community Entertainment Democrat or Republican Work and the Economy Government Rutgers Total Interactions between public sector and private sector 1. Public Sector regulation of the private sector 2. partnership between public and private sectors Public-Private Partnership Why care?
You may have heard arguments like this: “Government ‘help’ to business is just as disastrous as government persecution… the only way a government can be of service to national prosperity is by keeping its hands off.” Ayn Rand Do you agree? A) No B) Kinda C) Yes D) I like turtles Public-Private Partnership Public-Private Partnership They are common in healthcare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRsZbGs24jY&feature=emb_title Education: Public-Private Partnership Public-private partnerships are at the heart of all economic activity Regulation Do you agree? A) No B) Kinda C) Yes D) I like turtles Regulation Karl Polanyi (1944): deregulation in labor, land, and money (credit/debt) markets always ends in social disaster or crisis Social disaster or crisis = widespread social, political, and economic costs upon everyone as a whole Examples of state’s role labor, land, money Regulation – Labor Child labor minimum wage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddiOJLuu2mo&feature=emb_title https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ptHavHrDuE&feature=emb_title Regulation – Land Regulation – money (credit/debt) the state must intervene in money (debt) markets to protect against inflation and deflation inflation

This always results in mass unemployment and recession Most negatively effected = small and medium sized businesses “The Untouchables – Wall Street bankers/2008 financial crisis” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l85rVWbaH0Y&t=317s Sociological puzzle 8: answer only questions on this slide Answer all three questions with your group: 1. Why do you think rent prices have been increasing so much in NYC/Jersey City/Newark? (ie why is there rising demand for land with limited supply?) 2. According to Polanyi, why would deregulation in local real estate and rental markets result in social disaster? Give specific examples. 3. Why are rent control laws necessary for NYC/Jersey City/Newark? How do organizations influence government? • If you were a cigarette company, what kinds of laws would you want to see passed? • If you were a big cattle rancher, what kinds of laws would you want to see passed? • If you were Apple computers, what kinds of laws would you want to see passed? How do organizations influence government? • Barley, Stephen R. 2010. “Building an Institutional Field to Corral a Government: A Case to Set an Agenda for Organization Studies.” Organization Studies 31(6):777–805. • RQ: how have corporations used organizations to influence the US government? • Methods: Historical sociology = a method of identifying social change using primary and secondary historical sources (mixed methods) How do organizations influence government?
“My thesis is this: during the 1970s and 1980s American corporations built, partially intentionally and partially unintentionally, an institutional field for shaping public policy. By institutional field, I mean a set of organizational populations and the relations that embed members of these populations into a social system or network with a purpose.” How do organizations influence government? How do organizations influence government? • On the far left stand corporations, the ultimate source of influence, as well as peak organizations, trade associations and foundations. On the far right are Congress and the Administration, the primary targets of influence, as well as the media and ordinary citizens, which are secondary and tertiary targets respectively. In between lie Washington law firms, lobbying firms, public relations firms, ad hoc organizations, and think tanks, all of which act as agents for the organizations on the left. How do organizations influence government? Relationships that define the network of organizations • Money flows from and among the organizations on the left and terminates with the organizations in the center • Lobbying links organizations on the left (principals) and in the middle (agents) to Congress and the Administration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4jdcdlquF0&feature=emb_title How do organizations influence government? Relationships that define the network of organizations • Opportunities to testify, inform, and advertise chart the information flows that link corporations, trade associations, and think tanks to Congress • The flow of personnel is the only bi-directional relationship. Corporate executives go to work in government positions, and vice-versa (ie “the revolving door” • voting for presidents and members of Congress, is the only mechanism that average citizens have for entering the network How do organizations influence government? How do organizations influence government? Why did multinational corporations construct this organizational field? • Divide the labor of corralling government • actors plays unique roles • Why do players have different positions on a sports team? • Amplify the voices of their constituencies • “Everyone knows a choirs’ tune is stronger and carries further than that of a soloist” • to shield concealed interests – funders and founders • Employing law and lobbying firms, ad hoc organizations, PR firms, and think tanks makes it more difficult to identify whose interests are in play Sociological puzzle 9: answer only questions on this slide (an example is on following slides) Pick one issue from this list: fracking, charter schools, private prisons, opposition to medicare-for-all, right to work laws, an issue of your choice Answer all five questions with respect to the issue that you selected 1. What is the issue and why is it controversial? 2. What are the corporate lobbies involved in the issue? 3. What are some of their legal and political goals in the issue? 4. Are there any organizations working to oppose the corporate lobbies? 5. Considering the organizations that you found in question 4, what are some of their legal and political goals in the issue? Sociological puzzle 9 – example Pick one issue from this list: Citizens United 1. What is the issue and why is it controversial? Use google to find some basic information on the issue that you picked and why it is controversial, here is a synthesis of what I found Citizens United was a landmark decision of the US Supreme Court decision permits unlimited political expenditures by corporations looking to influence politics and elections 2. What are the corporate lobbies involved in the issue? Use google to find which corporate lobbies supported Citizens United, I landed on the Wikipedia page and found this – This tells me that the US Chamber of Commerce and National Rifle Association are the corporate lobbies that supported Citizens United. (And I can do more google searches to find more information about these groups). Sociological puzzle 9 – example 3. What are some of their legal and political goals in the issue? From the US chamber of commerce website, I use their search to find statements on Citizens United (on the right). Sometimes it is better to use google.
I learn from the 3rd link: The US Chamber of Commerce supports Citizens United because they claim that making political campaign contributions is their first amendment right. In their view, any attempts to reduce or eliminate Citizens United is against their first amendment rights. Sociological puzzle 9 – example 4. Are there any organizations working to oppose the corporate lobbies? I google – “organizations that oppose citizens united.” I find that the American Civil Liberties Union opposes Citizens United, in this link: https://www.aclu.org/other/aclu-and-citizens-united So I can answer the question – The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) opposes Citizens United, from their website I learned that the ACLU is a non-profit advocacy group that defends individual rights and liberties. 5. Considering the organizations that you found in question 4, what are some of their legal and political goals in the issue? From the same link above I learned that the ACLU believes – “Thus, the ACLU supports a comprehensive and meaningful system of public financing that would help create a level playing field for every qualified candidate. We support carefully drawn disclosure rules. We support reasonable limits on campaign contributions and we support stricter enforcement of existing bans on coordination between candidates and super PACs.” Therefore, the ACLU seeks to remove undue influence of money in politics with 1) a system of public campaign financing and 2) limits on campaign contributions. This is opposed to the US Chamber of Commerce’s position on Citizens United ruling.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.
Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.
If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations.
Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
