Environmental Factors and Health Promotion Presentation: Accident Prevention and Safety Promotion for Parents and Caregivers of Infants

Introduction

¡Environmental risks- 25% of children disease burden

¡Environmental risk factors cause diseases

¡Risk factors are present in children’s environment

¡Children have different behaviors from adults

¡Exposed to environmental risks in various ways

¡Environmental risk- exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS)

Environmental account for 25% of the disease burden in children under five. Health problems in children are often caused by exposure to various environmental risk factors in the environment they live, play, and learn. Children have different behaviors from adults and this means there are various ways they can be exposed to environmental risks. This presentation includes a teaching plan for caregivers focusing on exposure of secondhand smoke to infants. I will discuss the environmental factor, health effects, and recommendations on accident prevention and safety promotion.

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke

¡SHS- smoke from cigarette+ smoke breathed out

¡Smoke has 7,000 plus chemicals

¡100s of the chemicals are toxic

¡Benzene, formaldehyde & arsenic ammonia

¡Vinyl chloride & hydrogen cyanide

¡35% of U.S. infants are exposed to SHS

Secondhand smoke (SHS) is a combination of smoke from burning cigarettes and the smoke breathed out by smokers. It contains more than 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds of these chemicals are toxic and roughly 70 can cause cancer. The toxic and carcinogenic chemicals include benzene, formaldehyde, arsenic ammonia, vinyl chloride, and hydrogen cyanide (Nadhiroh et al., 2020). More than 23 million or approximately 35% of infants in the U.S. have been exposed to secondhand smoke. Tsai et al. (2018) reveal that among the approximated 58.0 million non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke during 2013–2014, about 36.7 million were adults, 9.1 million were adolescents, and 14.0 million were children.

Environmental Factors and Health Promotion on Accident Prevention and Safety for Parents and Caregivers of Infants SAMPLE 2

qHealth of kids is important to both society and parents.

qKids are defenceless to natural dangers

qTheir organs could be harmed by synthetic compounds

qIndoor air pollution is harmful to the youths

qIndoor air pollution is an environmental factor causing harm to infants

This problem need effective solution before it affects the kids

Th environment needs to be favourable for the kids because they have limited defense machines that can adapt harsh health care conditions. An environmental factor that tends to prove harmful to the health of the infants is indoor air pollution. Kids spend most of their times indoors. This implies that they tend to have  a higher breathing rate from the environment as compared to adults who can move from one location to the next. Therefore, the quality of air can affect kids more than it can affect the adults. Studies done by numerous scholars shows that biomass and tobacco introduce poisons to the body which could end up causing serious diseases on babies(Agarwal et al., 2021) Besides, the delicate nature of the babies also supports the need to provide them with a better and clean air within their environment. Toxins such as carbon monoxide and other contaminations that could reach the kids needs to be prevented before they harm the kids.

Importance of Knowing Indoor Pollutants

qOne need to know is there is a pollutant at their homes.

qAcquiring carbon monoxide detectors could be a better thing.

qCleaning the air channels saves the family

qInvesting on clean air and warming at home is healthy

qReduction of the health complications at home starts from clean air.

The cost of creating a clean home starts from knowing pollutants

Parents need to respect and advocate for well being of new born children. The support they need to offer to these kids is through providing a clean environment without contamination. Parents who smoke need to manage their smoking addiction by not exposing the kids from such toxic chemicals. However, all these starts from educating the parents to understand the value of creating a beautiful home for the new born (Wolkoff, 2018).

Sources of Indoor Pollutants

qMould, odours and microbial pathogens in bathrooms.

qParticulate matters and emissions from outdoor air exit.

qNail polish, hairspray and perfumes in bedrooms.

qStinking unwashed clothes from laundry room.

qGas leakage and cooking devices from the kitchen.

Tobacco smoking, upholstery, furniture from the living room

Sources of indoor pollutants are numerous from the house. Kids tend to move from all the rooms in the house and it’s the role of the parent or the care giver to offer the best environment that would suit these kids. The bathroom is one of the sources of the indoor pollutants (Tran et al., 2020). The mould, mildew, and other microbial pathogens tend to be unclean bathrooms and this could affect the quality of air that the kids are breathing. The chimneys that takes out the outdoor air to the surrounding environment have particulate matters and pathogens that reduces the quality of air outside the house. The bedroom in another source of these pollutants because of the perfumes, hairspray and nail polish. The kitchen, living room and laundry room are other sources of indoor pollutants that parents and caregivers need to observe with great attention.

Caregivers Improving Overall Health and Wellbeing of Infants

qCaregivers need training on significance of indoor air quality

qCaregivers need to know how smoking and biomass affects kids

qCaregivers need to know kinds of illness linked to indoor pollution

qThe caregivers needs to share the information with their neighbours.

qThey need to conduct regular check on house ventilation.

qCaregivers need to share with parents on the need to improve air quality

The caregivers spend more time with the children and therefore, they need adequate training on the importance of the indoor air quality and how biomass and smoking can affect the small children. The implication is that the they get to learn various illness that may result from indoor pollution and working on the interventions to ensure that these pollutants are well addressed to improve the air quality (Wolkoff et al., 2018). In the presence of better air quality, children have higher chances of being accident free and effectively growing and developing.

Parents Improving Overall Health and Wellbeing of Infants

qParents need to buy and replace air filters in the house.

qParents should use electric stove instead of biomass.

qParents should not smoke in the house.

qParents should not use strong perfumes or aromas.

qPlanning of the house need to have many windows and ventilators.

qParents should train nannies on the need to keep the house clean

The parents have the pivotal role in improving the overall health of their kids. The parents and caregivers gives might have different roles in the kids. However, in some instances the parents would act as the care givers. The air filters in the house sometimes get worn out and need replacement. In such cases, the parent need to act swiftly to replace the air filters as it would increase the quality of air among the kids. In the kitchen, the parents are advised to adopt the norm of using electric stove because they have minimal emissions in the house (Megahed & Ghoneim, 2021). They could even use another option in place of the biomass as fuel to reduce emissions within the house. For smoking parents, it would be advisable to smoke far from the house to limit kids from becoming passive smokers. The parents need to regular check their windows to ensure free flow of air across the house.

Recommendations on Accident Prevention

qPaints used in the house should not contain unsafe synthetic compounds.

qFamily unit cleaners should be sheltered

qRegular cleaning of the carpets

qAlways ensure the stove is off and no leakage

qAvoid consuming different biomass in the house

qDo not cook in the house without proper ventilation

The house need to meet standards that would allow it offer safe environment for the kids. For instance, the painting of the house should be protected in the sense that it does not contain any unsafe compounds. Painting the house with unsafe paint would affect the quality of air within the house and many children would not thrive from the emissions. Families should also adopt the nature of using family unit cleaners which are sheltered or customize family cleaner to utilize safe items (Megahed & Ghoneim, 2021). The regular cleaning of carpets or replacing them with hard flooring is important in reducing dust within the house as these carpets harbour a lot of dusts. Many gas leakages have caused numerous losses in the past and its always better to ensure no leakers and the stoves are off.
