Of course we are speaking of more than 150 years ago so she could have any disease process that falls between A-Z in the alphabet. She was bedridden for 11 years, what she did for nurses and the nursing profession was done while she was active.
Depression is far more than a person laying in bed feeling sorry for themselves. It is an illness like any other that needs professional treatment and medication that was not available to Nightingale. Perhaps her bed was preferable to an asylum? Or perhaps she had one of those diseases that fits between A-Z in the alphabet? No one knows, we can only speculate.
