Assignment:Specialist Mental Health Guidelines

This report represents the guidelines of specialist mental health clinical attitudes for the treatment of depression in young
people. Our main purpose is to identify the gaps between guideline recommendations and clinical practice in the
management of young people that are suffering with depression. This can be accomplished by undertaking audit of medical
files in mental health care service, Melbourne, Australia. According to analysis it is found that US guidelines for primary care
and practice parameters of the American Academy for young people with depression are provided at priority basis. The
research that is implemented by our researchers was qualitative and we found some clinical recommendations in case of
treatment for young people. Here we will discuss about these recommendations and some other essential factors.
Main Body
This research is a qualitative approach that is why most of the information is gathered by taking interview from various
groups those belong to health and medical fields. According to NICE that is National Institute for Health and Clinical
Excellence there basically five guidelines that are need to considered. These guidelines of mental health for the treatment of
depression in young people are developed with the combination of evidence and consensus based methodologies and there
are five phases to represent these guidelines:
• Current Scientific Evidence both published and unpublished
• A series of focus groups
• A formal survey
• An Expert member that consensus workshop
• The revision and iteration among members of steering committee.
The above discussed guidelines are targeted the youth people that come under the range of 10 to 21 years and on the
behalf of these guidelines following recommendations are provided. These recommendations are provided for the
management of adolescent depression in primary care. Following are some essential recommendations for above discussed
guidelines in case of youth people.
• Firstly it is necessary to do active monitoring of mildly depressed youth people. This is actually the initial stage of that
mentally depressed people and if that person is monitored actively then proper treatment can be provided at initial stage.
• There is need of detail in case of specific application of evidence based medication and psychotherapeutic approaches.
This is mostly required in case of moderate to severe depression.
• Proper and careful monitoring of adverse effects.
• After monitoring if we found any critical or small problem then it is necessary to do consultation and co-ordination of care
with mental health specialists.
• Ongoing tracking of outcomes and this is necessary to know about the actual problem.
• If after start treatment there is no improvement is found or partial improvement is found then there is need to perform some
essential steps for better treatment.
• The medication will be offered to young people if depression is unresponsive after receiving four to six sessions of
psychological therapy.
• Depressive disorder symptom severity is established clinically.( Sarah E Hetrick,2015)
Proper medication must be provided under care of medical experts and doctors so that if any problem occurs then treatment
can be started. (Hetrick SE, e. 2015)
Each recommendation has its own strength and every single stage of treatment for young people there is need of these
recommendations. These discussed guidelines cannot be replaced clinical judgment and this is not only the source of
clinical judgment. These above discussed guidelines are initial steps for handling critical situations of depression in youth
people. But these recommendations are beneficial to know about the actual condition of depressed people. There are
various cases have been seen where due to these recommendations positive results are found. These recommendations
are considered as primary care for depression management. For further treatment for this depression there is need of
usability, feasibility and sustainability of guidelines and also for determination. These all are necessary to improve the
outcomes of depression. Besides above recommendations there are some additional findings that are necessary to discuss
here and appropriately belong to problem of depression in youth ones. ( Cheung, A., Zuckerbrot, R., Jensen, P., Ghalib, K.,
Laraque, D., & Stein, R. 2007)
Firstly it is found that depression severity is often simply judged by clinical judgment and this is done by DSM/ICD. This thing
is not done regularly but yes in mandatory cases this is implemented.
Second finding is that young people who are antidepressant have no adequate trial for psychological therapy before any
kind of precipitation for antidepressant.
These are two major findings that are found while doing this clinical research on case of depression. These all information is
recorded from medical files and require data that is based on practical facts. There are some essential tools that are
necessary to improve the treatments of depression in young people.
Conclusion
After this whole discussion we can say that above discussed all recommendations are effective enough to depressive
problem among youth. These recommendations are provided by NICE that is itself an established medical and clinical
branch. With appropriate care and by implementing these given recommendations it is possible that these mental health
issues can be resolved easily.

week 3.Depression in young people : assignment
Introduction
Depression is a disorder which can be considered as one of the most widely diagnosed disorder in the world. Depression
can be considered as the human emotion of sadness which occurs because of a failure, disappointment or loss. There can
be any reason for the occurrence of the depression and for this, experts should observe or monitor the depression patient in
order to find out the chances of improvement in the patient. This report will demonstrate the methods which are used for
analyzing the depression patient and which method would be more suitable in order to find out the solution of the problem of
depression in young adolescents. In this section of report, we will discuss the experience research design, qualitative
research approach, sampling methods and data collection methods. Then this report will highlight the ethical aspects of the
selected case study in its ethical aspects section. Then this report will elaborate the result of the analyzed information
collected using the different methods. (Thomas, 2000)
Methods
The treatment of depression can be started by analyzing the patient’s behavior. There is need to keep observing the
behavior of the patient in certain circumstances. Depression in young people is common as they have lots of new things to
deal with. These things might be bad for them so there should be someone who can guide them to survive in each kind of
situation. There are commonly 4 types of ways to observe the patient’s behavior and that are as follows: –
? Research Design
? Research Approach
? Sampling Method
? Data collection Method
Research Design
In the treatment of depression patient, experiment research design can be used. It includes observing the behavior of the
patient. It is necessary to keep observe the daily activities of the patient which may help to collect the necessary information
about the patient using which doctors can come to a point that what is the main reason for the depression of the patient.
This may also include the way in doctors may observe that how differently each young adolescent react towards a change in
his or her environment. Everything which is associated with the treatment of the depression patient is experiment. Doctors
may try to use some new techniques in order to find the reason of depression in particular young adolescent so that its
solution could be found out. There are multiple ways which can be used by the doctors which will help the patient to keep
himself away from the depression.

There can be several reasons for the depression of the patient and it is doctor’s job to
find the reason and let the patient live an anti depressant life. Thus experiment research design should be used as it will also
help doctors to solve their future cases of depression in young adolescents. (Most, 1992)
Research Approach
A qualitative approach was used in Week 1 report and thus this report also has chosen this approach which includes the
collected data into some form of explanation, interpretation or understanding of the people and situation which have been
investigated by the researchers. The coding and analysis procedure of this approach includes that doctor may access the
previous records of depression patients. The previous records help the doctor to understand the problem of the patient and
this will also help them in the treatment of the depression patients. The coding procedures help the doctor to write down his
observation during the treatment of the depression patients. The doctor should keep his own experience during the
treatment of the patient as this will help the fellow doctors to provide the best treatment to the depression patient in future.
This will also help to follow a predetermined approach towards the patient with the same reason of depression.
Sampling Method
Sampling method helps to taken the patients who are suffering from the depression due to the same reason. There are three
kinds of sampling methods and that are simple random sampling, systematic sampling and sampling with unequal
probabilities. In this case, sampling with unequal probabilities would be more suitable than the other two sampling methods.
As there is no equal probability in the depression patients and doctors have to choose this method in order to get a better
estimate. (Fisher L, 2015)
Data collection Method
There are 5 kinds of data collection methods and that are registration, questionnaires, interviews, direct observations and
reporting. Direct observation is the most suitable data collection method in case of treatment of depression patient. This may
include that doctor observers the behavior of the patient and also observes the day by day improvement in the depression

patient. This will help to keep the patient away from any kind of depression. (Practitioners, 2014)
All the procedures which were chosen for the study is appropriate and there is no need to make any changes in them. Direct
observation is the best way to provide the best treatment to the depression patient.
Ethical Aspects
There are several issues pertaining to this study like there are some pharmaceutical companies which publish the research
on medication and how they market them to the consumer. There are some people who think that taking anti depressants
pills is an easy way to become happy but it can be considered as an ethical issue. There is need to understand the nature of
the depression and then try to resolve the problem which is the reason for the depression. There are multiple kinds of
depression which may occur due to some reasons. Some of the sub types of the depression are unipolar depression, bipolar
depression, atypical depression, dysthymia depression, seasonal depression, psychotic depression and postpartum
depression. (Nathanelypapers.blogspot.in, 2015) All these depression relates to some kinds of ethical aspects which the
depression patient would not recommend to disclose. The researchers explicitly addressed the ethical issues in the article
and there is no need to provide any kind of evidence for assuring that participant’s safety and confidentiality is protected.
The approval process is mentioned by different ethics review committees and there is no practice which is ethically
questionable.

Results
The report included that recommendation provided in the report is actually from NISE which is actually an established
medical and clinical branch. There is need to appropriate care should be taken before implementing the given
recommendations as these will help to know about the stage of depression of the patient and from where to start the
treatment of the patient. All recommendation clears that there is need to monitor the depression patient in order to know
about his or her improvement and this will also help to know about the stage of the depression of the patient. Medical files
and recording can be used for gathering more data about this case study and this will also help to find the solution to the
problem of the depression patient. The authors kept their interpretations and conclusion separate from the analysis results.
(Ell K, 2015)
Conclusion
The researchers have highlights the recommendations which are quite useful as all are provided by NICE. Thus these
recommendations should be implemented in order to know the stage and nature of the depression and then start the
treatment of the patient. During treatment, it is advisory to keep monitoring the patient’s health and behavior. There is
strength of this case study that with the help of it nature and stage of depression and how treatment of the depression
patient can be started effectively are known. But, weakness includes that it does not mention that some depression patient
also try to become happy by taking some anti depressant pills which should not be taken as they are not the solution of the
problem. Thus there is need to gather information about depression by considering it as medical condition. This is also
considered as future idea for the study in order to remove its limitations.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS

Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
