Describe how the nursing profession is viewed by the general public. Discuss factors that influence the public’s perception of nursing. Describe ways to educate the general public on the professional nurse’s role and scope of nursing within a changing health care system.

The nursing profession has seen several modifications since it’s inception. Nursing was originally connected with female- dominant caretaking and caring roles. The women lacked formal schooling and nursing training . They were mostly housewives with skills and expertise passed down from family members who wanted to help the sick. Their profession was not hampered in any manner ( Salmond & Echevarria, 2017).

The roles of the nurse have definitely advanced and evolved. Nurses play a vital role in patient care and outcomes. A competent and well informed nurse could in fact be the difference between life and death with respect to patient care. As the training requirements for nursing have become more extensive so have the responsibilities. As nurses, we are the eyes and ears for the patient. We are trained to treat prophylactically and improve upon what we are able to with interventions coupled with patient education and advocacy. We have to understand clinical prioritization by being able to determine which scenarios require immediate attention and those that would not be drastically affected by delay of care. Unfortunately, this is not always understood by the public and may actually come off as non- competent and or negligent. It is up to us to display competence so that not only the public grasp better understanding of our roles but also our colleagues. We are a team and the physicians especially want to feel confident with respect to our competency so that we establish and maintain public trust.

• Nursing has been defined as both science and art. Science as a discipline and art as the application of the knowledge,

Nursing is the study of human health and healing through caring” ( M. C Smith 1994, p.50 ) . You can translate this to mean, nursing is the study of people by taking care of them.

In 1978, Donaldson and Crowley sited that a discipline offers a “unique perspective, a distinct way of viewing phenomena, which ultimately defines the limits and nature of it’s inquiry ” [P 113]. This you can view at as to mean, environment has an impact on human being.

Some researchers have done theory-research-practice, comparing to the patient-nurse collaboration. According to Fawcett’s (1984) ‘the discipline of nursing is the study of the interrelationships among human beings, environment, health and nursing. Although majority have accepted this theory, others have defined it as the study of study of life process of unitary human beings, (Rogers, 1970, 1992).

As you can see, Nursing is a unique discipline. More attention need to be made to make nursing knowledge grow.

Patient advocacy

The concept of patient advocacy is critical in a healthcare system as the patient gets assistance from individuals who are more informed about healthcare (Galazka, 2019). Some of the kinds of assistance include screening, diagnosis of diseases, treatment, and any necessary follow-up of a medical condition to ensure that a patient recovers well. Therefore, this discussion explains the importance of patient advocacy and the role of nurses in healthcare advocacy (Witkop et al., 2020).

To start with, advocacy in healthcare seeks to ensure that patients voice their views and get heard on various healthcare issues that are critical to them. Thus, this plays a bigger role in protecting addition to promoting the patients’ rights. Advocacy also helps the patients to channel their views and wishes to the concerned healthcare authorities, which get incorporated into the decisions made to improve their lives. Moreover, patient advocacy is crucial because it reduces the probability of committing medical errors and harm to help improve the welfare of the patients.

Within the healthcare system, nurses also play an integral role in advocacy. In this advocacy role, they support the best interests of the patients while ensuring that they remain respectful of the family role, values, and norms. Together with the patients and their families, the nurses involve themselves in attending team meetings to clarify some important information relating to health care challenges (Galazka, 2019). In this case, they ensure that the information communicated from the healthcare team is correct and complete, reflecting professional standards and ethical principles.

One situation that I encountered that involved patient advocacy was when one of the patients was received into the hospital. Upon admission, my colleague decided to settle him in unsafe accommodation. Upon looking at the kind of diagnosis received, it was a misdiagnosis, and the self-care instructions given were not clear. Thus, I had to intervene by communicating with the medical facility and the lead doctor to help resolve the issue (Witkop et al., 2020). In the event that I did not see it necessary to advance my advocacy, the client could be disadvantaged. For example, the kind of accommodation was unsafe, and the wrong prescription of the treatment could have negatively impacted the client’s healthcare to the extent that his life could be terminated.
