Academic Integrity & Citation Transferring Knowledge Discussion
The evidence-based practice project idea that I had for research is infection control, which is a major problem in healthcare in general, but particularly in central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, CLABSIs are the most serious of all healthcare-associated infections, causing thousands of deaths each year and an additional $700 million in costs, with 25% of those who get them dying from them (2022). Quantitative and peer-reviewed methods of scholarly nursing research, in my opinion, are required for further investigation into this issue. The article I chose for my CLABSI prevention topic is Quantitative Results of a National Intervention to Prevent Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection. It is critical to run a CRAAP test and ensure that the research I choose meets the criteria because it will lead to more accurate research on my part as well as improved relevance. When evaluating articles, this test considers currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose (New Jersey Institute of Technology, 2022).
To determine the appropriateness of the research, I will use the New Jersey Institute of Technology Library CRAAP test. In terms of timeliness, this source was published in late 2019, and the information appears to be current. This article is highly relevant to my research question and meets all of my requirements. The CDC funded the study, as did the national STRIVE team that carried it out. The Annals of Internal Medicine Journal published the findings of a group of doctors and nurses with master’s degrees in public health. In terms of precision, all of the authors of the study have taken part in a number of other reputable research studies. I would also argue that when the CDC conducts a study, there are numerous guidelines or accuracy. The purpose of this article is to provide information and solutions to a problem. The intended audience would be healthcare workers and administrators looking for better ways to reduce CLABSI rates in their hospitals. This article is free of bias and presents a range of perspectives.
Finally, plagiarism jeopardizes the personal and institutional integrity of the university. The reputation of the university may suffer and it may be discredited (GCU, n.d). Furthermore, if the deception was carried out by a certified nurse, the nursing profession may be associated with deception. In the worst-case scenario, you may be deemed completely unfit for the field. As a result, stealing others’ ideas is not worth the risk. Plagiarism can be used to justify expulsion from school and a failing grade, according to one of the video segments titled “Information Literacy: Perils of Online Research.” This can make it difficult to find a good job. If a student is unsure about proper source attribution, he or she should consult a lecturer. Graduate students must double-check their work.
“I am hoping to become a nurse educator at some point after graduation. The thought of plagiarism does concern me. According to Carter et al. (2019) plagiarism is an important ethical issue. They state one of the challenges for student nurses is the lack of preparation regarding APA format. Because this can be intimidating it can lead to unintentional plagiarism such as parenthetical citation errors and incorrect referencing of sources.”
There is a definite lack of understanding when it comes to APA. I learned it in high school and I graduated in 1973 and also used APA in my ASN, BSN, and MSN. I think many students have been out of school for several or many years and they may have forgotten how to properly use APA. This is the reason why I provide as much information possible to help students with APA.
I don’t think however that this leads to unintentional plagiarism. The plagiarism I have found is word for word copying and the citation is not from the actual source used or one is not used at all. The student has to realize that they are copying from a source word for word. When cheater websites are used the student cannot cite with that website so one is made up. At least that has been my experience teaching over the past 8 years for three different schools. The first two schools were not overly concerned with plagiarism but GCU, who I have been with for five years, is very strict about plagiarism, as it should be, who would want a nurse taking care of them who cheated their way through school? What will they cheat with or take shortcuts with on the job? We are reminded that we are mandatory reporters when it comes to plagiarism. Blessedly I rarely find plagiarism.
Question Description
I’m stuck on a Nursing question and need an explanation.
Imagine the following scenario: You notice that some of the research has not been cited correctly or even at all. When you approach your classmate, the response is that “no one will notice and it is not a big deal anyway.” What are your next steps in speaking with your classmate? Consider how this could reflect on the credibility and integrity of the individuals involved, the University, and the profession.
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

My next step will be to inform my classmate that his actions are illegal under GCU rules because they constitute plagiarism. Plagiarism is the use of another person’s work without properly crediting the original author (GCU, n.d.). This action disregards the thoughts and work of the original author. You may be considered “stealing” intellectual property if you give the reader the impression that you invented the idea. I’ll let my classmate borrow ideas from other sources as long as he properly cites them. Citing sources, on the other hand, shows the reader that your ideas are supported by other writers, which improves the overall appeal of your essay.
Students can take precautions to avoid plagiarism and other issues. LopesWrite is a well-known course at Grand Canyon University. Use LopesWrite’s originality checker to avoid plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty (GCU, n.d.). If my classmate’s actions are the result of citation management issues, I will suggest solutions. Most GCU databases can export citations directly to the Refworks tool, and many GCU databases can import citations into the Endnote tool (GCU, n.d.).
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
