For this week’s group post, I want you to consider how human behavior interrupts our search for the truth. (“Talking to Strangers,” pages 262).
As a mom, I try to find the truth about what is happening with my children. Most of the time, however, I have no clue why they are behaving in a certain way. I think remembering that my children have limits, and that I will never know exactly what they experienced or what they are feeling in any particular moment (the TRUTH), helps us stay connected and appreciate each other.
My problem is simple: I forget to treat strangers the same way!
Do you agree with the author, that “many of the crisis and controversies” that have happened in the U.S. could have been prevented if we all remembered to treat each other with caution and humility in our quest to find the TRUTH? (“Talking to Strangers,” 262.)
For insight on the logic of this discussion question, please read the following two articles:
You have witnessed situations wherein people were in conflict simply because the people failed to treat each other with caution and humility, right? What did you see or hear someone doing/wearing/saying? Did you ask yourself: “What is Happening?”
Specifically, the question for this Discussion is as follows:
What behaviors/routines/customs do individuals in the U.S. engage in that are clearly examples of not finding the TRUTH because of the failure to consider human behavior (i.e. failing to consider that someone may be under intense stress when you see/hear/communicate with them) and how do you think we can improve our search for the truth?
B. Discussion #6: Social Mobility
Discussion Board Participation: To obtain full points on discussion boards, you must reply to the original (my) post ONCE with your thoughts and insights to the question I have posed to you. Then, you must also reply to TWO (2) other posts.
One sentence answers to questions posed will not yield full points. Your written replies MUST be at least 150-250 words.
Each of your posts is worth 5 points, and there is a total of 15 points available for each discussion board.

For this week’s group post, I want you to consider the phenomenon of SOCIAL MOBILITY.
Recently, I decided to research my ancestors. Apparently, the Bartons were a bunch of Puritans who thought it was a good idea to burn witches in Salem! Seriously. It is very disturbing to find out Bartons thought women should be burned at the stake for being difficult.
More relevant, however, I found out the Phillips side of my family were Homesteaders here in Kansas. Farmers from Scotland, to be precise, and my parents were the first generation in their respective families to attend college.
Have you considered your intergenerational mobility (review text pages 189-201)? Have you considered how the culture of poverty has been transmitted across generations in your family?
For insight on the logic of this discussion question, please read the following article:
You have witnessed how relative poverty is passed intergenerationally (from your family to you) and/or acquired intragenerationally (all by yourself), right? What did you see or hear someone doing/wearing/saying? Did you ask yourself: “What is Happening?”
Specifically, the question for this Discussion is as follows:
What behaviors/routines/customs in the U.S. cause relative poverty and what we can change about social mobility in the U.S. that would end relative poverty?
A. Discussion #7: Racism
No unread replies.No replies.
For this week’s group post, I want you to consider the phenomenon of RACE AND RACISM IN HISTORICAL AND COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE (text Chapter 11, pages 266-292).
During the summer of 2020, my daughters watched protests throughout the United States. My youngest observed that many of the major news sources were focused exclusively on the words “riot” and “looting.” I was angry, because I think the words “riot” & “looting” were being used to distract from the historical and comparative perspective on racism in the U.S.
I also think calling a protest a “riot” and describing protesting as “looting” is a perfect example of COLOR-BLIND RACISM.
For insight on the logic of this discussion question, please read the following two articles:
You have witnessed color-blind racism, right? What did you see or hear someone doing/wearing/saying? Did you ask yourself: “What is Happening?”
Specifically, the question for this Discussion is as follows:
What behaviors/routines/customs in the U.S. are clearly examples of color-blind racism and how do you think we can change the behavior?
B. Discussion #8: How effective are the Public Service Announcements?
Discussion Board Participation: To obtain full points on discussion boards, you must reply to the original (my) post ONCE with your thoughts and insights to the question I have posed to you. Then, you must also reply to TWO (2) other posts.
One sentence answers to questions posed will not yield full points. Your written replies MUST be at least 150-250 words.

For our last week’s group post, I want you to watch at least five different Public Service Announcements that have been submitted by your fellow students.
Considering everything we have learned to date, including the sociological theories and research on human behavior, which of the five videos did you think was the most effective at spurring changes in human behavior?
Did any of the videos make you consider changing your human behavior? Did you want to share with family or friends any of the videos? Why? Did you ask yourself, as you watched the videos: “What is Happening?”
Specifically, the question for this Discussion is as follows:
Which video [Identify it specifically] should be published, or shared with everyone in the U.S, and why?
Discussion #9: The Illusion of Asymmetric Insight Copy
No unread replies.No replies.
For this week’s group post, I want you to consider how completely “blind” people were to Hitler. Comparing Neville Chamberlain and Winston Churchill’s responses to Hitler, consider how we assess the character of a stranger. (“Talking to Strangers, pages 32-51).
When I was a prosecutor, I would assess the character of a defendant (i.e. a stranger) based solely on what the defendant looked like at the first appearance. In fact, I would make predictions on which crime a defendant was accused of committing based solely and exclusively on how the defendant appeared!
Do you agree with the author, that we all “jump at the chance to judge strangers” and our judgement is based solely on our own prejudice? (Talking to Strangers, 50.)
For insight on the logic of this discussion question, please read the following two articles:
You have witnessed the “illusion of asymmetric insight,” right? What did you see or hear someone doing/wearing/saying? Did you ask yourself: “What is Happening?”
Specifically, the question for this Discussion is as follows:
What behaviors/routines/customs do individuals in the U.S. engage in that are clearly examples of ‘assessing the character of a stranger based on prejudices’ and how do you think we can change the behavior?
B. Public Service Announcement Video Submission
Submit Assignment
For this assignment, you will create a public service announcement to share with the class!
Step 1: SELECTION
Select a human behavior that you think needs to change (review the examples you have reviewed in this class, including not washing your hands, using drugs, skipping school, destroying the planet and drinking and driving).
Step 2: APPLICATION
Apply the sociological theories you have studied in this class to the human behavior (for example: Does peer pressure explain drinking and driving? Does labeling theory explain drinking and driving? Does social class [i.e. income, wealth, education, occupation or lifestyle] explain drinking and driving?).
Step 3: SOCIAL CHANGE
Using sociological theory, determine how you can get humans to change their behavior (for example: If peer pressure causes drinking and driving, then a solution may be to change peer groups; If labeling theory causes drunk driving, then a solution may be to change the label; If social class causes drunk driving, then a solution may be to change social class.)
Step 4: THINK, THINK, THINK.
And get creative! How will you communicate the message from Step 1 (the human behavior that needs to change) and Step 3 (the social change you seek)? Use your imagination.
Step 5: CREATE.
Create and upload a video (you can use YouTube or your phone/computer to create the video). Consider the examples of public service announcements that you have reviewed in this class for guidance.
The video must be at least TWO MINUTES in length (10 points, 5 points for each minute) and must clearly communicate (A) The human behavior that you think needs to change (20 points); and (B) The social change you seek (20 points).
Step 6: UPLOAD.
Submit your creation.
Write this announcement I will read it and submit it

If you have not heard from me within 24 hours and need to contact me urgently, please send a follow up text to
I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.
Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.
If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations.
Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
