Case Study on Moral Status
The importance of nd the effectiveness of that treatment can influence how patients view their sickness. I believe that knowledge is my greatest area for improvement when it comes to spiritual care. Aside from Christianity, I don’t really know much about other religions, thus it would be simple for me to unintentionally say or do something that could be insulting or insensitive since I simply do not know how to handle certain situations. My willingness to “live and let live”—the idea that as long as you aren’t harming anyone else, you can do or believe whatever you want—is something I would consider to be a strength. I like to think that I am generally impartial when it comes to treating others fairly, but I am aware that I have a few minor imperfections that I need to improve.
I would want to receive as much information about my alternatives from my doctor and a second, maybe even a third opinion if I were a patient in a scenario where I had to make a difficult decision. Additionally, I would seek advice from my parents, my husband, and my siblings in an effort to reach a choice. And I would spend the entire time in prayer, seeking God’s guidance. Although I personally would give a lot of weight to other people’s ideas, I believe that as the patient, I should have the last say in what happens, even if my choice differs from what everyone else suggests. I would hope that my family could make a wise choice if I were unable to do so, and I believe that my husband should have the final say when it comes to making medical decisions.
The moral status of a fetus takes special consideration, as it could come into conflict with a pregnant woman’s right to choose what happens to her body. There are three primary ways of determining the moral status of a fetus: A fetus has the sa;;me rights as a living being; A has no rights, or That the fetus will have increasing moral status with increasing gestation (Brown, 2018). This paper will explore the of the nature of human persons and analyze the Case study on “Fetal Abnormality,” including the theories of moral status used by each character in the case study. I will also discuss how the theories influenced each of the character’s recommendations for action.
Christian View of the Nature of Human Persons
According to the Christian faith, every human being in the universe is a living image of God. This image culminates in the mystery of Christ, who is regarded as the perfect image of God and the only heavenly and human being who reveals God to humans (Müller, 2020). Christians believe that the human person should be preserved and that human society should be renewed. According to the Bible, the human being is inextricably linked to the earth. For example, the Hebrew word for both man and earth is adamah (Müller, 2020). The human being’s relationship with God automatically exposes him or her to social reality.
The Christian concept of the human person is a man and a woman who find the greatest happiness in the reciprocal gift of self to the other. This gift has great value and meaning because it depicts how the human being, like God, stoops down from himself and establishes an interpersonal dialogue with others (Clauson, 2015). The Christian view of human nature is consistent with the theory of Cognitive properties, which states that all humans have cognition. Cognition includes awareness, perception, memory, comprehension, and thinking ability.
Humans are perceived to have self-awareness, which includes awareness of time, the past, and the future. According to the Cognitive properties theory, humans have been given the freedom to act and participate in purposeful acts (Stahl & Kilner, 2019). Furthermore, human beings can provide and appreciate reasons for acting. They can also communicate using a language, which is significant because most creatures cannot (Stahl & Kilner, 2019). Finally, the theory regards humans as possessing rationality and high order volition.
The cognitive properties theory is related to intrinsic human value and dignity because it portrays humans as having the highest value when compared to other creatures (Stahl & Kilner, 2019). Human beings are at the top of the cognitive ladder and should be valued and treated as such.

Jessica is a 30-year-old immigrant from Mexico City. She and her husband Marco have been in the United States for the last three years and have finally earned enough money to move out of their Aunt Maria’s home and into an apartment of their own. They are both hard workers. Jessica works 50 hours a week at a local restaurant and Marco has been contracting side jobs in construction. Six months before their move to an apartment, Jessica finds out she is pregnant.
Four months later, Jessica and Marco arrive at the county hospital, a large, public, nonteaching hospital. A preliminary ultrasound indicates a possible abnormality with the fetus. Further scans are conducted, and it is determined that the fetus has a rare condition in which it has not developed any arms and will not likely develop them. There is also a 25% chance that the fetus may have Down syndrome.
Dr. Wilson, the primary attending physician, is seeing Jessica for the first time, since she and Marco did not receive earlier prenatal care over concerns about finances. Marco insists that Dr. Wilson refrain from telling Jessica the scan results, assuring him that he will tell his wife himself when she is emotionally ready for the news. While Marco and Dr. Wilson are talking in another room, Aunt Maria walks into the room with a distressed look on her face. She can tell that something is wrong and inquires of Dr. Wilson. After hearing of the diagnosis, she walks out of the room wailing loudly and praying aloud.
Marco and Dr. Wilson continue their discussion, and Dr. Wilson insists that he has an obligation to Jessica as his patient and that she has a right to know the diagnosis of the fetus. He furthermore is intent on discussing all relevant factors and options regarding the next step, including abortion. Marco insists on taking some time to think of how to break the news to Jessica, but Dr. Wilson, frustrated with the direction of the conversation, informs the husband that such a choice is not his to make. Dr. Wilson proceeds back across the hall, where he walks in on Aunt Maria awkwardly praying with Jessica and phoning the priest. At that point, Dr. Wilson gently but briefly informs Jessica of the diagnosis and lays out the option for abortion as a responsible medical alternative, given the quality of life such a child would have. Jessica looks at him and struggles to hold back her tears.
Jessica is torn between her hopes of a better socioeconomic position and increased independence, along with her conviction that all life is sacred. Marco will support Jessica in whatever decision she makes but is finding it difficult not to view the pregnancy and the prospects of a disabled child as a burden and a barrier to their economic security and plans. Dr. Wilson lays out all of the options but clearly makes his view known that abortion is “scientifically” and medically a wise choice in this situation. Aunt Maria pleads with Jessica to follow through with the pregnancy and allow what “God intends” to take place and urges Jessica to think of her responsibility as a mother.

Human beings and their origins is a question that many theories have not answered clearly. Scientific research and knowledge regarding human beings are rapidly growing; however, there is a lot that science alone cannot tell (Grand Canyon University, 2019). Philosophical and theological ideologies have tried to explain areas that scientific research cannot explain. Religion have their own worldview of what a human being is, its origin, and values. Both religion and spirituality as well as science give human beings some sort of moral status. For instance, medical professionals believe that humans are important creatures and anything causing pain to them should be eliminated through medical interventions. Religion believes that taking a life is prohibited and disease and suffering should not be an excuse for the action (Crisp & Sanders, 2018). This paper uses the presented case study to discuss moral status regarding the Christian view of the nature of human beings.
